Well, almost lost the car today. The cam cover breathers were open to atmosphere, which ive never had an issue with before. My cousin had taken the car for a high boost run and felt it missfire, he pulled up, opened the bonnet and found fire coming out of the cam cover which he managed to put out. Coilpack #2 looks like it failed and may have arc'd causing the whole thing to catch fire. Cam cover is supposed to be routed to the catch can but the fitting had broken off. Luckily the car is still here but i'll be fixing thar issue asap before any further high power runs are made.
So i've sent down 3 working coils New timing cover New S2 PTU from RGS Found several posts on facebook of coilpack fires and they all seem to be PTU related, my S2 ptu was done by the previous owner so over 15 years ago .
Just ordered a pair of these PSR drag radials as i dont want to have to roll around the 15" ET streets if i want any traction. They'll go on my 18x9.5 Work XT7s
Tyres arrived, car should be back to me by next week if all goes well. I may take it to the drags in the next few months depending on my work schedule.
Doubt anyone has used these on a zed yet, they are popular with the skyline crowd though and i've only heard good things about them.
So, had a look at the stock turbos today and the answer as to why it smoked and lost a whole heap of power is very obvious . Both turbos look like they've inhaled something and the compressor wheels are annihalated. And a fair bit of oil in one of the old side mounts Hahaha well that answers a lot.
Annnd we tried a high boost setting . Damn Eboost is crapping out on me and it goes blank as soon as the solenoid starts opening to control boost, not sure if theres a short or something somewhere. Now its either use my Link for boost control or get another eboost. I tried 21psi on my own last week and 18psi yesterday while the eboost was working. When i sort the boost control out i'll try higher boost settings. At 18psi the car feels comparable to my 400rwkw FGX XR8 from a rolling start, and much quicker than pretty much every other car i've owned. Also for anyone interested, the PSR radials hooked 21psi in 2nd gear with no issue.
Just found this regarding the Eboost2 issue Link: https://ls1tech.com/forums/forced-induction/1332842-e-boost2-issues.html "update for anyone who researches these symptoms in the future. I was able to put a car battery in my passenger seat and wire the power from the Eboost straight to the battery. I went and tested 6-7 hits on high boost. Both rolling into throttle and also brake boosting. The Eboost never malfunctioned. This tells me that I must be losing voltage on the initial spike of boost" Hmmm, i may rewire my eboost to a different power/ground but why would it be causing an issue now after ~8 years wired in that spot? Dry solder possible?
