Am wanting to add some rear speakers to my current audio setup, which consists of a 4 channel amp running front speakers and a Sub. Unfortunately my head unit has only 1 RCA out and I cannot bridge my amp (i dont think) so is my only option getting a new head unit with 2 RCA out or a 4 channel Amp that is bridgeable and get another 2 channel amp for the sub??
Also want to run a capacitor, would a 1 - 1.5 Farad be enough for such a setup?

    Cheers

    Hey Rob,

You can get converters which drop your speaker level down to line level to run into an amp input. Or you could just run your rear speakers off your head unit and see whether you get enough volume from them before buying another amp.

    Just buy some

RCA spliters, Split the feed and each amp will have a input. Just up the input level and you will still get a good signal.

In my opinion, addition of capacitors is a waste of time and money.

That is, unless you have a huuuuuge system, or want it for looks. Spend the cash on a decent battery, and decent power cables and connections instead, and you'll have a better result.

I'd try what Con suggested about running the rear speakers straight from the deck - just make sure you buy some speakers with reasonable sensitivity (efficiency), to get the most out of the relatively low power that you have. Speakers should have sensitivity quoted in dB, at around 90 dB (usually from eg ~88dB up to ~95dB) for car speakers. Higher is more sensitive. Higher power speakers usually have lower sensitivity, as power handling is usually a trade off with sensitivity, unless you spend some bucks on a well designed set.

If it doesn't work, I can probably get you some of the speaker to line level convertors at a good price.

Splitting RCA's can yield bad results

If the deck's RCA output voltage isn't very high and your running two amps off 1 output you might find you will get clipping of the signal.

I tried this once off a crappy Prosound head unit and the gains had to be set so high on the amps because there wasn't enough source voltage, and the result was a clipping signal and poor sound quality,
I then bought the entry level alpine mp3 deck with time alignment, don't think time aliment is just a gimmick that's not worth it its actually bloody brilliant when you set it up, brings the sound stage to a new level!!

Once the Alpine was in the quality was so much better, and the system could go twice as loud as with the prosound deck.

But then again it might just be because it was a prosound deck ? hopefully yours wont be so bad.

    Suggestion

i wouldn't bother with rear speakers, assuming its in a Z, you especially wouldn't need them as it is a small cabin car. i reckon you'd be better off using the money for the rears and putting it towards a better front stage.

RCA splitters are the way to go, i think Jaycar also have some products in their range, from memory they had something which turned one RCA into two, it wasn't a splitter. i used splitters in my previous system, had no problem with them.

imo, i reckon with the hassle and effort, i'd forget the rears. i've disconnected the rears in mine and got decent splits up the front, sounds much better.
