Dougy, the dash LEDS can be dimmed as normal via the Dimmer switch. I have tested this and it works fine. The LEDs in the pods can not be dimmed. I have driven with them at night and I dont find them an annoyance. But I guess everyone is different. If people wanted them to be dimmer, they could get less powerful LEDs. The ones I used were 2000 mcd, and they are bright enough for me. You could try 1000mcd or less for less brightness, but this may effect the even distribution of light behind the buttons..

    Cheers

    Well done Mark!

If I ever get around to driving the Z on the Great Ocean Road like I've always wanted to, I'll be stopping at your place! Name your price!!! :D Maybe your car should now be known as the:

Nice writeup Jedi, but some advice. You repeated a number of times the directional quality of LED's. This isn't so. You can buy LED's with built in diffusers. When ordering LED's specify the viewing angle and you can eliminate the chore of putting on plastic covers that diffuse the light. Also you can buy LED's with bidirectional voltage capability, built in resistance and even direct plugin replacements for popular bulbs. The variety is amazing. I will have a dig through my data books at work tomorrow and see if I can come up with some Australian suppliers for this stuff. :)

    yeah thats true....

yes you are totally correct, but as always, I learn about these things once I have finished my project...:) Also, the website I bought my LEDs from, although quite good, was a little limited in the variety of color and viewing angle of the 3mm globes. The 5mm globes were not a problem, but yeah, the 3mm globes were limited. And the 5mm globes just wouldn't fit. Perhaps another online store with a greater variety would be better. Still, I'm very happy with the way the job turned out...:)

    Cheers

Maybe some of those LED's that change colour, going through the colour spectrum over time. You could have a different dash colour everytime you turned the dash lights on. :p :zlove:

    Another thing JEDI.

If you wanted to you can change the speedo/ fuel/ rpm etc needles to blue also. They look kinda like lightsabres when you do it though.

I'll try to find the tech article.

Might be better to host pics on the aus

server as the server Mark is using has security priveledges that require some viewers (depending on browser settings) to click through a prompt fo every picture... I know I do

    yeah sorry about that...

I have no control over the security certificate, its stupid Monash Uni policy.... so yeah, if it is an annoyance or causes problems then perhaps the pics should be hosted elsewhere..

    Cheers

That looked like a lot of work!!!

    turned out great though!

If some1 finds leds that change colour due to changes in voltage, maybe the dimmer will change the colours of the LEDS ?

The voltage doesn't change the colour, it depends on the brand of LED, some Blue LEDs which I have bought are a purple colour, some are just a really intense blue. Same would go with all of the colours.

Multi-colour is often one of two (or three) colours. Which colour depends on which pin you give power to.

eg Red/Green will have three legs. one is common, one is red and one is green.

Then there's the others.....for example if you want to go REALLY nuts....Multi-Colour LED.

To do a simple multi-colour dash, you'd need to do what Jedi did, but instead of the resistor looping back to make contact, the other pins (3) would need cable running to a switch to select the colour.

Of course, if you use the above LED, you'd possible run some POT's (dials) to "tune" the colour to your choice. Feeling like Burgundy, Red, Teal, Aqua, White, Green, Blue (Light or dark?). Have to see how well it'd light a dash up.

It itsn't all that much harder than what Jedi's done if someone wanted to do it. Need to figure out where to mount the selection switch/dials.

Of course, you'd have a colour to match any mood :D

    No resistors required???

Hi all......just wanted to let people who are thinking of doing this mod know that
www.brighlightsautoparts.com sell LED's suitable for this application that DON"T NEED THE RESISTOR to be added!!!...they are already 12V friendly!!!! :)

Not sure if they are listed on the website yet??? but get in touch with them to find out more!!!
