Ok.. to make life easier for myself, I'm just going to essentially cut and paste from an irc conversation I had with a friend:

my car went <conk> last night
then wouldnt start for more than a few seconds at a time
then after a few tries wouldn't start at all
now I turn it to the on position and the 'fuel pump' sounds funny
I say 'fuel pump' because I'm not sure which side the pump is on... It seems as though the sound is coming from just above the fuel filler.
tried turning the ignition to 'on' a few times and at one point the fuel pump seems to go <geeeeeeeehhhhhhh-crunch-crunch>
then i tried it a few more times, and all i heard from the back is <tick-tick>, <tick-tick>, <tick-tick>

does that sound like fuel pump issues to you guys?? I've done some research and saw the article on how to bypass your FPCU, and thought of giving that a try, and the tech section says to check www.z32.org's tech section for a way to test the unit, but z32.org has been under construction for over a year now :/

Any help from anybody would be appreciated... I'm going down at lunch time to have a look at her. Thanks to everyone

sounds like the FPCU or the pump it self

do the bypass on the fpcu, it takes 5 minutes and see if the car runs.If it dosnt and the pump dosnt sound like it is working then the pump itself has failed or the pickup has failed for some reason.

noise above the fuel filter ????

That would be on the passenger side in the engine bay and there ain't nothing above the fuel filter except the bonnet.

My guess would be the FPCU so try the bypass and if it still makes the same noise then take the fuel pump out and fill up a coke bottle with petrol and see how long the fuel pump takes to drain the coke bottle.

Here's a weird one for you.

I think i've heard the same noise as you. The 'tick tick' sound came from the left rear of the car, if i recall properly, the car wouldn't turn over as well but eventually i found the problem to be a dead battery. Who would have guessed! New battery and off i go. Just a thought even though it seems a bit weird.

No no chewy... Fuel FILLER, bud :)

Now that it's day time and I've had a look, it looks like the noise was coming from the FPCU... I unplugged the fuel filter and checked for pressure and there's absolutely nothing... I'm gunna go try the bypass now, and failing that... new fuel pump time.

Thanks for everyone's quick response. As always you were most helpful  :zlove:
