Well ... since rebuilding the engine I have a major issue with it literally pumping oil out the exhaust, My initial thought was the Turbo seals had failed so replaced the turbo (supposedly a good one) ... same problem, so took the exhaust manifold off and found oil in the exhaust port of #5 so discounted the Turbo ... stripped the engine down and sent it off to checked, came back checked out ok ... re-assembled, fired her up and gerrrrrrrrrr still doing it ... at the suggestion of Glenn (mungyz) I disconnected the oil line to the Turbo and jammed the exhaust wheel to stop it spinning ... was the bloody Turbo/s all along ... the "good" Turbo I bought was a dud

Anyway, Turbo rebuilt and all is good, engine is running really nicely and the off boost is really good (no boost until it has a tune) ... this is a pleasant surprise as the heads have been heavily ported, fairly major combustion chamber and inlet manifold work and bigger cams so was expecting fairly "stodgy" off boost performance.

Engine specs ... 88mm wiseco pistons
    eagle rods
.001 extra clearance ACL race bearings
    Balanced
274 duration and 9.3mm lift CAMS
Major porting, combustion chamber and inlet manifold work
    555 nismo injectors
    60mm Throttle Bodies
Pulsar GTiR Turbos with modified .86a/r exhaust housings
    External wastegates
    Modded sump for extra capacity
Full flow oil system with larger cooler and filter
56mm Radiator with factory fan and shroud

nice engine work dude. DO NOT USE A COMETIC HEAD GASKET !!! get a oem. if your pistons allow. a greddy/trust or nismo gasket

Wow,Good to see some Zedpowar close up from all the way back home in NZ. Thats a interesting build...

Plenty of time gone into the bottom of that block. I have deburred a Holden 5.0 like that, takes along time.

Cometics won't be a problem if the surfaces are right.

Yup ... spent hours at it, after running a couple of bearings (reason for the build) I am a bit paranoid about oil supply so I have also de-burred the Heads which hold a lot oil from returning to the sump. So hopefully this work along with the extra Sump capacity ... holds 4 liters, up from the std. 3 liters ... I should be ok.

    Good work! :)

Cometic gaskets are fine, I've installed them in half a dozen builds with only one requiring a re torque & no other issues beyond that.

give you a drag race at Nizfest Nigel :)

Got a tune today ... very happy and a little surprised with the result. The graphs show it to be "laggy" but to be honest it doesn't feel anything like it on the road :D

Car behaved all good ... water temp sat on 76'c the intercoolers never got above room temp ... had a bit of smoke issue but went away, put down to Oil still in the exhaust and rings not bedded in properly (only had 200km on the engine)

414kw on 14.5 psi - Very impressive! What max boost do you expect to run?

Thanks .... Not looking at running anymore than that ... now;) ... my whole objective on this build was to get the max. power on the least amount of boost ... I believe the time I put into porting the Heads, modifying the exhaust manifolds, using .86 exhaust housings and making a good exhaust system has worked for me.

By keeping the boost down the stress on the engine is also down.

it looks like you have welded the wastegate shut.....??

    He has

He has also fitted external waste gates ;)

Why did he opt for externals over internals.... im just looking at gtir turbos and the possiblility of fitting these and wonding if it was due to space restriction or something.

    A few reasons...

1: Got a cheap set of Greddy Exhaust manifolds which have provision for external w/g's
2: Externals offer superior boost control ... was intending on running a lot higher boost.
3: I felt I could make dump pipes that could flow much better if not having to worry about w/g flow.
4: My need to try some thing different ;) ... probably the main reason really :D

If you are fitting GTiR Turbo's using the factory exhaust manifold you need to grind the block on the passenger side to make room for the Exhaust Housing (much bigger than factory) ... on the drivers side you need to take some off the Oil Filter Tree and the Engine Mount to make room for the Compressor Housing. Apart from these bits there appear to be no other room problems ... this was as far as I got before changing Exhaust Manifolds.

Just moved the rev limit up to 8000rpm and max boost up to 16psi ... all I will say is "HOLLY MOLLY" :D

Will stick it on the Dyno again in the new year for a final tune.

Awesome Head work, very nice build. 8k rpm is the absolute max id go on hydraulic lifters.

Thanks, lost count of how many hours I spent with the Die Grinder.

Yeah, was thinking 8k maybe a little on the high side for the lifters, will most likely pull the rpm limit back to 7.7k or 7.8k

7700 is where i have mine, never had a problem with teh lifters, just the plugs fouling after touching the limiter ...

I have the same problem with the limiter, have considered shifting it higher to avoid hitting it but haven't yet. Used to have it set at 8Krpm a while ago, didn't see any harm from it but have it set at 7200rpm at the moment - hard to stay off that when launching at the drags.

pretty sure mine is becasue my fuelling is too rich at the top end, approx 10.5 to 1 right when it hits the limiter, im thinking of changing my plugs to a BKR7E as the positive electrode sits back a bit

A video would be nice. :D

Question about above picture, when you take of the spark plug boss, are exposed threads on the spark plug a potential source of a detonation causing hot spot ?

If so what do you do use shorter plugs or machine of the thread on the bottom ?
