I'd be suprised if you can ever clean that up properly, that is looking very nasty.

 thats not good.......mmmm even though it doesnt mean you have to but maybe there is your excuse to rebuild the engine to be super duper strong     ready for some turbos :D

So anyone got any ideas how to clean it out? Boss at work suggested a mildish caustic solutuion constantly being circulated by a small pump. Maybe a good dose of CLR.

    so it hasnt been overheated?

Hope it doesnt end up pitting too bad...

    CLR possibly?

Alkaline solutions do not work too well on alloy (in the heads). Acid either for that matter. I found this the hard way when i soaked my spare throttle bodies in degreaser overnight...

Be very careful with what you use, and make sure that it doesnt stay in the block / heads for too long. Flush with plenty of water (or radiator fluid with corrosion inhibitors) afterward.

Got the timing chain covers off to check the chain guides.

Only one was broken, but the oil pump chain was very loose too. I'll replace all of them.

Good luck with it. Looks the goods. I will be going the Ls1 conversion with a Z31 over the next few months. 6 speed manual too from a HSV. I am not getting rego, engineering or anything like that so it will certainly simplify things. The engine, gearbox etc will be from my other car so that helps a bit.

Look forward to seeing how you go about things.

    Say No To Caustic!

Caustic eats aluminium and alloys. I work for Alcoa, they use caustic to extract the ally out of the ore, you could use caustic but be aware that any left in the block or heads will effect alloys, I would use a clr mix quite weekly mixed and just be sure to fluh very well.

It's actually pretty clean inside. Just my dodgy photography skills... I'll have to get some photos in the sunlight.

Won't be rebuilding, can't justify the cost as of yet. I'll see how well I can clean it out. I'll knock out the welch plugs (a few need to be replaced anyway) and should be able to get most of the crud out.

I think that it will be time for a GB on speedflow fittings soon too

    Had another fun filled weekend.

Installed a set of Racing Logic coilovers along with PZP front upper arms and a set of Egg's rear traction rods. Those upper arms are real bastards to fit. Rattle gun a necessity.

Ripped my old rear bar off and half installed my Kaminari bar. PITA and at a weird angle :help: Grog in it for you Al.

Stripped most of the interior out including the rear seats due to my fixed bucket seats. Not sure if I will keep the trim, or just paint everything and keep it polished. HEAPS of room without a spare, trim, seats or carpet :p

Also removed the front bar, but didn't get as far as ripping the air con out. All the gas has been removed in the most legal way available at my place. :D

Got a piccy of the top of the engine all nice and clean.

This is a bit of a weird one...

This pipe connects the IACV valve between just before the throttle to the IACV valve. Is there any reason why there is 1 foot of extra hard pipe that goes no where? The end is capped off. As far as I can see the've used a very expensive looking 'y' piece and a bit of tube to do something a elbow could have. Why? Is it to damp out pulsations or something like that? Any ideas appreciated.

I would very much like to get rid of it.

So thats why you were late coming over to my joint last night.

So how often to timing Chains have to be done? 300 000? lol

There actually isn't a recommended time to change them...

    Quick Saturday update! Yay!

Spent most of the morning mucking about with the bunky, doing a quick tuneup and getting rid of an annoying miss at 2600rpm.

Pulled some more stuff off the engine:

And it still works! Missing the following:

    CTS
    AFM
    Alternator
    Exhaust
    All intake piping
    Aircon
    PS
    Radiator
    Thermostat
    Waterpump

Idles lovely and can still drive it around the yard  Roars into life better than before actually

Also found this squished between the air con radiator thing and the chassis.

    RIP little birdie :(

And earlier this week a big present turned up! The ZedShed  3 bay barn style shed. 10m x 8m. Nearly big enough rolleyes:

Won't have the shed up anytime soon due to earthwork problems, have to make a retaining wall. Guess who's digging a hole tomorrow... :(

If anyone wants a free air con radiator thing and a rear 2+2 Jap bar let me know. They will be going to the dump tomorrow if no one wants them.

    Question for clever people:

There is a pressure relief valve built into the oil filter assembley. Is this to allow oil flow if the filter gets clogged, or the actual pressure regulator for the engine?

Can I get rid of it? Does it matter having overly high oil pressure in a engine? I can't see a problem, except accelerated wear in the pump. Does anyone make external aftermarket regualtors?
