Intermittent problem

So got this intermittent problem happening every now and then on my 1990 tt. I would be driving, alls fine and sweet and suddenly the car will just cut out for a couple of seconds, a couple of times, and then return to normal.
Took it the mechanical and he noted a fault code saying one exhaust gas sensor was knackered, and the other was on it its way. He though this could be the problem i told him about, so I got both sensors replaced. It didn't happenfor a few days after that, but it now occurs just as regularly.

It only happens when I'm sitting at a cruise speed of around 60-100km/h for a few minutes. It's hard to explain, but it feels like if you were to put your foot down and take it off repeatedly. When the fault happens I cannot rev, but boost seems to work normal.

My thoughts were that it could be a fuel related issue. I replaced the fuel filter but didn't seem to fix the problem.Could it possibly be a blocked fuel line or junk in the tank? I bought the car 6 months and for the first couple of months it never happened, so I doubt there would be stuff in the fuel tank.
Alternatively I think I could be shit out of luck and perhaps the 02 sensors are finished again.

Anybody else experienced this type of problem?

After checking the O2's try swapping out the AFM with a friends. My previous Z was doing something similar for 6 months before the AFM finally died.

    Check your PTU

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

You may still have a Type 1 series PTU, these when on the way out can give similar symptoms.
If this is the case, then you only have to change over to the Type2 series PTU with all the plugs for a simple Plug & Drive.

tried disconnecting the 02 sensors and reconnecting them back. Still the same issue. The 02 sensors are brand new and not the cheap generic ones either. Thanks for the tip I might try change the air flow meter. Had a 280zx with a faulty AFM, when it went bad it wasn't an intermittent problem like I got now, when it went bad the car pretty much wouldn't drive. Perhaps it may be a faulty connection with the AFM. It has been tampered with I can see, because its got an aftermarket pod filter put on it.

I'll give the PTU a shot aswell, and let you guys know . Cheers for the advise , appreciate it

Also check the plugs on the CAS the PTU and the AFM ensure they all still have their metal retaining clip. My AFM one dissapeared the other day (while at work waiting for me to do more work on it) and and it is now randomly stuttering - the AFM plug is moving ever so slightly and causing it to hesitate.

    O2 Sensors....

If Oxygen Sensor Codes are logged in the ECU:

The O2 Sensor is open or shorted (abnormally high or low voltage is registered).

    Recommended procedure:

Check harness & connector, O2 sensor, fuel pressure, injectors, intake air leaks.
As the O2 sensors have been replaced you can forget about testing them, however the other areas should be checked.
Also, recheck the ECU for codes.

Did you take it for a drive while they were disconnected?

Didn't drive with them unplugged, sorry forgot that part. Stupid me lol
But I checked the connections of the AFM. It seems pretty good and had the metal clip still on. Disconnected when the car was running, and it stalled, so it's definetely working.

However I looked at the PTU and the plug looks like it had seen better days. Im not sure if it does anything at idle, but didn't notice any change when I unplugged it when the engine was running.

Hi mate, The picture you linked is not the PTU that is the TPS, the PTU should be located here and i don't think you can unplug it whilst the car is running as it fires your coilpacks.(dont quote me could be wrong).

The picture you've linked to is actually a shot of your TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) and it appears to only have a break in the outer rubber cover. Your PTU (Power Transistor Unit) is to be found on the drivers side front cover of the engine, about below and behind your top radiator hose. Its responsible for firing your spark plugs, so if you try unplugging it while the engine is running (and I suggest you don't) your engine WILL stop.

Just have a look in the tech section. You'll find plenty of info there to help getting to know where bits are located.

    Cheers, Andy.

So after a hard days work, replaced the AFM and the cars peformance seemed to increase dramatically, as well as got rid of a slight engine stumble from idle. Also changed the PTU with a series one PTU, and went for a short spin and the problem didnt occur, but didnt really notice much change. Thought the problem was solved, but it happened again on the drive home (with original PTU). Now thinking it could be the harnesses ( One looks very oxidised ) that leading to the PTU, that are a bit dodgy...

Got the same problem. Engine cutting out in the cruise... Found corrosion in one of the plugs going to the PTU... Dunno for sure if this is the culprit as yet to replace it. Will drop a line here when it is done and let you know.
