How does the ECU respond to the neutral switch being on/off?

I was just wondering. My Z used to idle up when placed into 1st gear (manual) and idle back down when put into neutral. But, no longer does this (I am going to check out the neutral switch to see if it still works).

What I was wondering is exactly what the ECU changes when it detects whether the car is in gear or not? Obviously as mentioned above there is the idle up. But what about changing to a different fuel mapping for example? Different ignition mapping? Overall fuel enrichment? Etc?
