Not every time, but sometimes when i start the zed up and she's sitting there idleing there's a grinding sound for a few seconds then it goes away.

almost sounds like a fan hitting something but from what i can see, all is clear.

any ideas as to what this could be? Wondering what the clutch fun sounds like when its gone bad - can they go bad?

    cheers

Where is the sound coming from?

Does it sound like it is coming from the front of the engine or the rear?
If you think it is you clutch on the fan. Grab a hold of the fan a see if it is loose.
Also to check the clutch mechanism, go for drive get the car nice an warm. Come to a stop turn the motor off, and quickly get out and see if you cna rotate the fan. It should rotate but be pretty stiff.
I suspect it is the fan, as the symptoms aren't quite right.
Let us know if it is from the front or back of the engine and I sure there are a few here that can give you a few more checks.

    Hmmmm

Mine does a high pitched squeal kinda then for a few seconds when it starts up (only when cold) if started and stopped throughout the day after that never does it, dunno what that is either (only happened since I got a TT also, never happened on the NA)

Definitely a belt sliping usually the alternator belt.

.... check your starter motor is not loose. Quick check wont hurt. Happened to me, just like you explain, and thats what it was.

I also have a TT and it does it in the morning first thing then once car is warm it seems to go away maybe something to do when the starter motor disengaging I have replaced the starter motor but still seems to do it, because when I had it on the hoist and had some one start the car you could clearly hear it coming from starter motor

check that the temp sender wires have not come loose from the clip on the cam cover and are touching the fan blade

screeching is usually a loose alternator belt, grinding is usually a dodgy solonoid or earth connection, ticking is the cts wires come loose from the wire holder and touching the fan

sounds like its coming from the front of the motor.

definitely got a few different options to consider - thanks for the input guys.

i'm not sure if it is just coincidental, but it does only seem to be happening when the motor is cold.

Its funny well not ha ha but it must be the TT" s because mine does do it when its cold in the morning, but when warmed up nothing, I have checked all the above mentioned, I do know on mine its the starter and nothing else Maybe a design fault, in the starter motor, maybe something is worn out on the fly wheel just guessing that is the only thing that makes noises on my car.
Any more experience TT owners that might be able to have any more in put on the subject...would be awesome because its got me baffled... Thanx in advance

Faulty alternator bearings, AC bearings, cam belt rollers/tensioner bearing. Possibly lifter noise?
