I was just quoted $9800 to repaint the car and $10800 if I wanted a colour change at the same time.

It was a glass out quote and included fixing about 20 small hail dents and a split 2k front bumper.

I guess that it's time to get some more quotes.

What's the contact details of your guy Gargoyle?

    Cheers,
    Evan.

10k is the ballpark for a top quality glass out respray. Its not expensive really if its a good job.

Zedders are a tight arse bunch when it comes to paint work, not directing that at anyone, just an observation.

Not that people are 'tight' per se, but more of a case of spending TWICE the average market value for these cars is just downright stupid. I'll be honest, I wouldn't spend that much. I would give it a shot myself though.

Yep, I agree. There's definate differences between panel shops. The really good places which guarantee a flawless finish, will charge 5 figures easily. The local dude down the road will prep, mask up and spray for about $3k

lol, id avoid the people you know, may come home with silver bits on my doors :/

i paid up around 8k for mine, windows didnt come out but was door open etc, would and AM spending that again on my red zed, you really do (most of the time) get what you pay for with painting.

i dont agree, what about spendign 4k on wheels and tyres when you only bought the car for 5k, 2k on coil overs, 15k on the motor.

If you arent interested in decent paintwork then thats your choice. and i think alot of 300zx owners are the same, i dont think it has anything to do with the price of the car, its what you want from it. Ive worked on a Jaguar E type that had a 250k restoration and its only woth 100k now, thats the car market.

When i get doen the last bit of paint on my zed it will probably have 10grands worth of paintwork on it and i wouldnt have it any other way.

you can still get spray jobs for 2k or so. Not too sure of the quality these types of places would give.

But the prices of spraying seem to have gone up a fair bit, not sure why, a friend of mine was getting similar quotes from many shops to get his EB coupe sprayed. 10-15k!! engine/glass out, but really, not much to pulling out the engine in a v8 EB or the glass either for that matter.

    I agree...

I guess it depends on what the car will be used for. Show cars, hot rodders etc etc will easily spend 10K+ on a spray job.

It becomes a bit much for a road car, knowing that you will eventually get stone chips etc etc.

For me, the Zed is only a weekender and it does enter into show and shine events. I paid close to $7000 for my recent spray job and am thrilled with the job.

So yeah, I think you get what you pay for. A cheap respray might look good initially, but how will it hold up 3, 4, 5 years away from now?

    Cheers

Hey, thanks for your input. A couple of questions.

What was the condition of the car before it was painted?
Was there any panel work that needed doing?
Did they take the glass out?
Did you go the same colour?

My quote was also to fit 2k spec headlights but I don't think that there is $3k labor there :)

    Thanks,
    Evan.

Back in the day, when the majority of smash repair shops would do a spray job for you, or repairs, or even custom work. Then insurance companies started dominating and many shops became purely insurance jobs. They were quick, easy, profitable and guaranteed payment. So panel work outside of the insurance companies fell down to specialist, high quality shops. Or cheap places who'd squeeze in a cash job in the middle of the shitty insurance jobs they were doing.

    answers...

Evan, the following was done to my car:

Firstly, the car was resprayed in the same factory Sapphire Blue color. I did not get the engine bay painted, nor did I get any of the interior bits painted (inside doors, under rear hatch etc etc).

The entire body was examined and any little dents or problem areas were dealt with. I also told them to focus on the doors, as the Zed doors can get a bit wavey with age due to the size of the doors and the attachment of side intrusion bars. So I told them I wanted the doors smooth and straight.

Then, all exterior trim and moulds were removed. The only trim not removed were the moulds on the targas, but they did such an awesome job that you cant tell that the small amount of metal on the roof was painted with the moulds in place. All the other trim was removed, including the rubber around the rear hatch glass. The glass itself however was not removed. Then I got them to fit all new trim that I had bought from coz.

I also had fitted a 2000 spec front bar, a Stillen ducted nose panel, Stillen type III sideskirts and door fillers, and a Stillen GTZ rear valance. All the urethane stuff was prepped and painted off the car, as well as the stock rear spoiler, as they used a "rubberised" type paint which wont crack or splinter when the urethane components flex or get thumped.

Then it was all put together ready for pick up. 3 weeks later, I bought the car back and they spent 2 days going over the whole car to cut and polish and fix any imperfections.

To my eyes they did an awesome job. No run marks, no discolouration, no bubbling and a super smooth body free of dents and ripples. And the paint is perfectly matched to the paint in the engine bay and the interior sections, so you cant see the difference between the painted and non painted areas in regards to color. Only in one section, inside the rear wheel arch did I find a small imperfection in the paint, about the size of a large pin head. But you can only see it if you are bending down and really focusing in on that area, and the light needs to be shining directly on it. So I'm not fussed about it. A paint expert may find faults with it, I dont know, but aside from the pin head imperfection in the tyre arch I certainly cant. So yeah, for the $6850 I paid, I was thrilled.

    Cheers
