With the recent discussion about the locust plague in NSW, I thought I'd try out a bug screen to protect the radiator and intercoolers. I got some fly mesh and fitted it across the front, securing it with the indicators at the ends, the number plate in the middle, and the under tray bolts underneath. I don't know if it will restrict the air flow too much. I'll drive around this week and keep an eye on the temp gauge.[image]http://tranzitor.hoosac.com/~gchr/Temp/Screen1.JPG[/image][image]http://tranzitor.hoosac.com/~gchr/Temp/Screen2.JPG[/image][image]http://tranzitor.hoosac.com/~gchr/Temp/Screen3.JPG[/image][image]http://tranzitor.hoosac.com/~gchr/Temp/ScreenWide.jpg[/image]
Great idea Gary...>>> Cheap & looks easy to do. Just remember to use fibreglass (plastic coated) flywire as it is nice and supple and shoudn't hurt the paint.Cheers Andrew
Another idea is fly-screen cut to shape of intakes, then either taped or cable-tied into position. Need to cut several "filters" to changed during the trip.
"Awesome" a guy with talent Way to go,good luck with the trails, let us know. :YD By the way your BlueZed looks "awesome" too .:-Z
Doubt... ...it will cause any cooling probs if your cooling system's up to scratch. Especially on the highway ticking over at just over 2,000rpm. Great idea, might have to whipe the debris away every now and then if you run into a swarm.
I'd be very worried about overheat .. ... using fly mesh. Test carefully!I've bought leaf-gutter-guard which can be similarly taped on and even doubled up, without any restriction to air flow.Cheers, Rob.:-Z
are you serious K-zed worried about over heating, its fly screen .In the daker race this is what they do if they hit a bug storm no more no less,so unless you are looking to set new time records from Brissy to Gilgandra, i think it will do the job just fine,i like this BlueZ he thinks on the move way to go buddy:YD
Hey Garry, your solution for holding> the mesh on, is great.:YD But I hope you'll forgive me when I say that, I've been posting this advice (Plastic flyscreen mesh), for the past week, and the silence has been deafening.:s :s It doesn't pay to be some people, when you are trying to be helpful, maybe I should use another nickname Cheers mate Lloyd :s :s :s :s :s
Now I feel all fuzzy & warm See "Events Discussion"."Can't be as optimistic about the reported Locust plague, so it would be wise to tape some insect screening or similar across your grill openings. A certain amount of protection can be obtained by wrapping the front of your car with Gladwrap, and cutting out the grill openings, BEFORE tapping on the insect screen with Gaffa/Duct tape."Lloyd :|
Good idea, but >> I would add some protection under the Fly Screen for the paint work. Perhaps, Gladwrap & cut out radiator & intercooler areas, then apply the mesh.:YD After all, at 100klm/hr the fly screen will be buffeted around a little no matter how tightly you apply it.=) Don't want to scratch your Zed, now do you. IMO. Cheers Kerry
Prelim. report Drove to Chewy's today. No problems with overheating. There was a combination of 100K cruising and driving in traffic. Looks good so far. Thanls for the comments about putting something under the fly mesh. This stuff is very soft and supple. I'd be surprised if there was any damage to the paint. I'd keep a close eye on it till we leave. See Ya, Garry
