Last I heard in SA a full cage was illegal. A roll bar is legal as long as there is nobody in the back seats and the top of the roll bar has to be 300mm further back from the front seats at their rear most travel. Dont quote me though.
Saw a 180 quite awhile bak street driving with a roll cage, but i don't know if it's legal or not. So putting in roll cage in, what do plan on using it for? drag? drift? track? or all of the above???
what he said Obviously each state has differing laws so contact an engineer FIRST ! I have my own designed and owner built cage in my rally car .... signed off in an engineers report.... no issues were raise because I talked to the engineer BEFORE I started construction, I also sent him pics and updates as the car was being built / modified. When it came to the inspection she passed without a glitch. That car has competed in several differant events and although the cage isnt CAMS approved it passes under the engineers report/certificate of compliance.

During the transition period from ECS to VCCS, signatories on this list (VSI No. 15) will be allowed to continue to issue ECS certificates. A list of VCCS accredited signatories (VSI No. 48) will be posted on the RTA website when available. This information sheet contains a list of persons with experience in automotive design and standards who have indicated that they are available for consultation. They are familiar with vehicle construction requirements in NSW and, for a fee, will provide advice to owners and vehicle constructors, and undertake technical assessments and issue engineering certificates. However, in publishing this list, the Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) does not endorse their services nor does it take any responsibility for the quality of their work. For the purpose of registration the RTA will only accept certificates from recognised signatories. Vehicle constructors and owners intending to engage the services of a signatory must establish from the signatory if the RTA will accept their certificate for the scope of the proposed modifications. If uncertain as to whether the signatory is recognised by the RTA to certify the proposed modifications you should ring the RTA Technical Enquiries on 1300 137 302. Please consult with your signatory to see if the authorisation covers your particular areas of modifications. A signatory who certifies a motor vehicle must:: â?? personally inspect the vehicle; â?? ensure that the scope and any construction or modification complies with the Vehicle Standards requirements of NSW legislation (including all relevant, applicable Australian Design Rules); â?? issue an engineering certificate in the form specified under the ECS (see sample overleaf). Signatories included in the ECS are known to be members of the organisations recognised by the RTA for this purpose, as listed in this publication. I have used John Wilson. as do most of the guys in canberra, prices are very good too. my whole car was 700$ I had engine swap. brakes suspention body interiour wheels Some quotes i got where 500$ per section :O Dont bother with a cage unless its for track work. engineering it is a must if you wanna keep it street legal.
In South Australia no. Not under any circumstances is a full roll cage in a street registered car on normal rego legal in SA. This is currently causing massive issues for Australian delivered rally cars in your state...
