Can't wait to read the volume of Verbal Diarrhea that results from the eventual discovery that this is all a load hogwash.

Just exactly HOW do you expect to demonstrate the successful improvement(?), if any, derived from this exercise(and will you be publishing this diatribe for the benefit of Automotive Designers/Manufacturers around the globe)?

Do you seriously suggest that Automotive Designers and Engineers have not stumbled onto this "dirt cheap", "simple", "backyard fix" in all the years that cars have been developed and improved(at enormous cost, in both time & money, to all involved)?

P.S. I have to leave now(the Bus, from the Home for the Terminally Bewildered, has just arrived).:zlove:

I am not saying this - I am just referring to what they are saying - your questions are better directed to them. I do however understand where you are coming from and will investigate this further once I have the relevant MSDS's.
I would however say that 10mm of flex is uncontrollable whereas the others are to a certain extent - any reduction of flex has to be a good thing in assisting in getting direct control

Your correct in implying that the design has a direct bearing on whether this has any chance of being useful. I can only wait for the product MSDS before investigating this further. I will also be contacting the persons who did this to the 300ZX to find out exactly what testing they have done to confirm the increases claimed. I am not sold on anything nor am I blinded by claims, I will only act if and when I have proof of this being effective, however I can see that this can be viable at this stage depending on further information.

Your correct however in pointing out that shitty suspension would mean that this is somewhat negligent in application.

What I have continually said is that I live 150m next to the ocean and this is a way of ensuring that I do not rust my chassis rails from the inside out - if I get any additional benefits then I am happy to take them

Going full Carbon Fibre costs a fortune whereas foam composites are much cheaper.

I appreciate your constructive comments - it will assist me in conducting a better investigation into this to determine if in fact this is viable. I will not rule out anything at this stage

    Sincere Regards and Cheers

tassuperkart Its a lie I tell you!

Manufacturers have long since grasped the benefits of this "hogwash" and in fact are employing said "hogwash" as we speak.

Sucks to be you old timer!!! Bus will be coming past soon.:D:D:D:D:D

He is either ignoring me or avoiding me!

He needs to get with the times as well! ;)

Where is his Z - maybe he's beaten us all to it and is waiting for the foam to dry in his chassis!

Progress??? I have found some Aussies companies selling their own stuff ....not expensive. Anyone else in on doing this...maybe hold a tech day

You PM has been answered(and if I may say so, myself)in a very courteous and informative manner.
The Bill is in the mail and quick payment would be appreciated as my ever-increasing age is a continuing factor of some concern(or so I am led to believe).

I am looking for the proper stuff - if you have it, I am in!
    Need details and MSDS
Otherwise I will take my time to get the right stuff and make sure it is before doing it - see QLDLDR's post - this is what I am after!

I have contacted the company and am waiting a response!
Might take a while to investigate - but I want to do it right!

    Cheers

If you are putting this foam in the chassis rails to stop rust wouldnt it be too late by now anyway? Does this foam have any rust preventatives in it to stop any rust that might be in there allready?

    Good question!

I will spray a rust neutraliser first just to make sure - then use the foam!

Even if I didn't use the neutraliser the foam would stop if from spreading and getting worse by blocking it from the elements and water getting in and thus significantly slow the process down, which is better than doing nothing!

    Trust that answers your question.

    Foam details

    Hey Chili

Apparently this foam is no longer available through foamseal - it is has now been replaced by this company (no wonder I have been chasing my tail on this)

Art Goldman (the senior engineer who advised the 300ZX owner on the foam to use -that is in the pictures) referred me to this company - I am awaiting for a response from them for their recommendation

    http://www.itwtacc.com/products/index.cfm?subApp=Foam Adhesives&appSubID=59

Seems we have a few options - I have found five different types so far and searching for more to find the most suitable and stiffest foam. It appears that epoxy type foams lack expansion rates and hence may not be suitable. Urethane foams appear to have excellent expansion rates and have good strength factors - which is what is needed.

Here is another link for auto foams with various grades

    http://www.dowautomotive.com/capabilities/product_family/betafoam.htm

    and another:

    http://autofoam.net/autofoam/autofoam-unleashed/

This link below is interesting - I am investigating this link further as well as the others. Seems there is a lot of research to be done still! - to find the best stuff available!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oCDwDhdTd3c

and this is what they are using - the 8lb and 16lb per cu/ft looks very promising for chassis rails - "as hard as a rock" with good solid properties in the MSDS such as high shear / compression strength etc etc! The lower grade weight foams would be suitable for A/B pillars whereas the higher weights would be ideal for chassis and suspension filling components

Looks the best and most promising so far but remaining open minded until further reports from other companies come in. (Note this is eight times more stronger than what was used in the 300ZX test modification that Art Goldman recommended)

    http://www.uscomposites.com/foam.html

Stay tuned for more - researching still!

    Cheers

    Update on foam

    For those interested:

After having been all around the world and now back again!

There are import restrictions preventing us from ordering any polyurethane foam from overseas.:(

I am currently in contact with at least seven specialist polyurethane foam manufacturers in Australia and am now awaiting for the responses from their engineers in relation to our specifications for very rigid and high strength foams for specific use in chassis and suspension components. :D

It will probably take up to a week for all the responses to come in as well as the assessment of the MSDS specifications and dispensing methods etc and allow any follow up with their engineers, I will keep you informed as soon as this takes place and when we have viable options and solutions. ;)

Having said all that - It looks very promising so far, with better options than before! :)

Have only had four responses so far even after seconday enquiries

Will update shortly - haven't stopped or forgotten, just waiting for some engineers to still reply.;)

Feel free to help locate materials/ suppliers to compile lists so we can then compare specs to see what is best options available. :)

For the weight of foam youll be adding to your rails, and the added fact that there is no way of telling how uniform the foam has been applied without an xray, why dont you just add 2kg of welds and call it a day?

Theyll hold up to more vibrations over a longer period of time and wont encourage capillary absorption of moisture.
