Hey all, looking for some engine advice, I've got two tired engines low compression etc and one blown headgasket, is there any chance I would be able to get at least one good reliable unit of them without sending them to a machinist? I know I'll have to pull them apart and get them measured to tell for sure but just wondering if that's even a possibility. I'm expecting to replace bearings, rings, possibly valves and all seals.

    Cheers, Tom

Blocks and heads will be your biggest deciding factors.

block is scored/rusted its a machine job. Hope you have at least 1 good one.

Heads are not flat. Its a machine job.

Crank as long as you get 1 good one.

I think it is possible. Need a hone the block before new rings. Those tools are cheap.

if not dont right you may end up with some whacky compressions numbers. (Low)

Get all heads checked and use the ones with he best hardness

You pretty much just answered your own question right there, can't really know for sure until you measure up.

I've built 7 of these in the last 18 months and all of them vary. In most cases you can get away with a hone unless the bore is damaged, replace the rings and bearings and get the heads faced as a minimum but for a little extra, get the valves back ground and the seats cut and of course replace the valve stem seals. After you put a full gasket and seal kit through it and reseal everything should be good as new.

Thanks all (ran out thanks buttons it seems), just wanted to make sure it was at least a possibility to get away without ending up at a $8k+ rebuild before I bothered pulling them apart.
