EL light up panel/strip + 12v inverter $68 (300zx center logo)

As you have to sand the red(or silver/grey) paint off the rear of the 300ZX(to allow the EL panel to shine through), it is obviously necessary to get the correct colour EL panel for your intended final result. :zlove::zlove:

 

Okayyyy?? That would mean that in that attached video, not only did he sand off the black coating on the inside but also the white "300ZX' lettering was sanded off til it way clear?
My impression from that video is that the factory applies a black coating over top of whatever the outward colour is - be it white (89-98) or red (99/00). The vid appeared to have that person sanded only slightly enough ot remove the black coating and leave the remaning white lettering behind. Is that not what you got out of that vid Lloyd? I take it you believe that one has to sand through the outer black coating and then again through the next colour, be it white or red.?
Now I'm a bit confused.
I watched the video a couple more times and at the end when he holds it up, it appears to NOT be transparent through the 300ZX logo. At least, that's what it looked like to me.

I'm thinking that although the OP bought white El panels, it's the combination of that El panel coupled with the white 300ZX logo that gave the representation of a light bluish tinge. At least, that's my theory of what may have happened. Otherwise, a white EL panel showing through a clear 300ZX logo should still remain white, correct?

I'd probably have to say "don't destroy a 2000spec centre panel!" Buy a cheap 90-96 spec panel and put a red EL behind it.

Actually put the red EL behind the 2000spec if you really want to mod that one. If you do the bluish white I'd think it might turn out purple or pink

I've got a spare (new) 99/00 Spec centre panel and my older original ones as well.

 

Use your old one mate, they come out exactly the same. dont waist a 99/00 centre panel. you have to sand it down to nothing anyway. so you will have to sand all the red off the 2k panel. just use a cheap old one. it will give you the same result.

 

That's my point though. That video looks pretty clear in that when that person sanded the 300ZX logo on the older panel, he didn't take it down to a clear state. He started sanding on a complete black surface until the white outline of the logo showed through. At that point he stopped otherwise if he had gone further, he would have sanded off the white logo portion as well. At the end of the video, you can see him holding it up and it appears that the logo hasn't been sanded down to a clear (transparent) state. Did you not see that same in that video?

 

My centre panel is Bright Blue and I can assure you that it is sanded all the way back to a Clear 300ZX logo(except for the inner surface of the logo, as mine is a blue outline only).
The factory item has a clear inner section as well, which is why it illuminates the entire logo.

 

I have a blue one and a greeny one if anyone would like to swap to give us a red one.....
Both Trev and I have the original light up panels and we have 2 spare ones to use for the conversion

 

I haven't taken one apart yet and wasn't aware of the second inside skin. Now it makes complete sense.
