Dump pipe/steering column problem

Hey all, I know this one gets asked a bit but I'm hoping to get some feedback on my setup specifically.
I've got AMS manifolds, JWT530 (GT2554r) and Z1 split 5 bolt dumps and the dump is fouling on the steering column, there's a bit of rub from the pipe but the lower right bolt is hard against the column, you can see some scoring in the picture.

So is this the result of worn engine mounts? it seems like the engine needs to move left rather than up as I was tilting the engine forward and it didn't help clearance much, gearbox isn't on yet so not sure where the engine will sit once it is.

I can probably get clearance by using an allen head bolt there and massaging the pipe a bit but wanted some advice first. Are there any other areas of adjustment that help like rotating the steering rack?

    Thanks for any help

Switch dumps (L<->R) and it will probably be fine.

I was considering that too, wasn't sure if everything worked ok. That bolt head will still be problem though, might try the allen bolt and switching them over tomorrow

I gotta come checkout the way yours is, I know the turbo setup im doing use to touch the column in the old car, im hoping this time around i can keep it clear.

You may be surprised. When you switch them the bolt you mentioned rotates around and won't sit where you see it in that photo.

Don't ask how I know

But doesn't the flange where the test pipes bolt up point at different angles if you swap them over ?

Sounds like magic, the bolt goes into the exhaust housing which doesn't move? I'll try though. A thinner lock washer would probably help too (using disc-locks in photo)

I haven't sorted test pipes yet and will be taking it to a shop to get the dumps mated to the rest of my system so will work ok for me

Anthony, you want to check out how it is now or wait until I figure out how to fix it? I should be over there tomorrow evening if you want

I had the exact same problem?!!

I'm sure there is a pic in my build thread. I can't remember specifically but a different "shallow"bolt was applied with freed up a few mm clearance from that bolt

I would be inclined to blame Z1's dumps too, there's no reason for them to be that far out. Actually, is it needed to clear the starter?

That bolt head clears using a thinner locking washer but I couldn't find any way to jimmy the engine or steering rack around to clear the pipe from the steering column.
What set-up do you have Vader? I tried swapping the dumps around and because of the different orientation of the turbo's flange the dump would have to go a fair way into the chassis rail to fit

What is the condition of your Transmission mount ? ... if old and "saggy" it give you problems in this area also.

I would grind the back face of the dump flange down 2mm so its a bit thinner and use a bolt with a slimmer bolt head.

    Those flanges are stupid thick.

Those washers are also stupid. Why are they so thick? Get some stainless spring washers, they are half as thick.

I usually don't use hardware supplied in kits. They are never correct.

You could also try counter sinking that hole and use a counter sunk bolt which a have a allen key slotted head. This has worked for me.

You should ultimately send pictures to Z1 and AMS so they can sort this shit out - given it wont take much - ultimately you could be helping others into the future - should one of them make an adjustment

Looks like a good setup you have going on there!

This seems to be a problem in this area of the car. The non turbo headers too.

The transmission isn't hung yet but I've had a jack under the back of the engine to lift it up but that doesn't seem to help add clearance from the pipe. I tried lifting the engine up a bit too and no luck.
Yeah, I swapped the washer and the bolt head is fine now. The ones in the photo are disc-locks, my knuckles will testify to their added break-away torque, not great in tight spaces though and prevented me from getting a ring spanner on that bolt. I sourced the bolts and washers locally so not part of the kit.

I think my solution will involve either a bit of heat and a hammer or drilling the flange out a bit so I can move it closer to the block. Or both. Anyone know how much clearance is needed so that it doesn't foul when going over bumps?

Hard to measure as the rack is rubber mounted. If the rack moved more than 5mm I would be surprised.
