Time to rebuild the engine and clean up 20 years of grime in the engine bay.

Should have everything stripped down by next weekend and then work out what's on the shopping list.

Where's the engine bay pic Dino? I mean the one of you standing where the engine used to be with beer in hand?

I thought I might save that shot for visiting supermodels who need to get down & dirty. :D

Found markings on the camshaft brackets, so I guess the camshafts have been out before somewhere in the car's past.

PITA - about half of the camshaft brackets have the bolts almost siezed in the alloy half bracket, so tomorrows job will be to make up a jig and carefully press them out.

Looks like an aftermarket head gasket, may have been leaking a little coolant into that 'rusty' cylinder.

Pistons and bottom end were still all OEM. Pistons have cleaned up well and will now be reused with new rings. Bores will clean up well with a light hone.

Engine has done about 180,000km and crankshaft end play still well within tolerance (0.08mm) but will put in a new set of bottom end bearings.

    Before (No. 6)

    After

Lots of casting slag in the block water channel that is in the process of being ground out. (Should have taken a before pic!)

The oil that was stuck under the crank girdle bolts was really on the nose, not quite bad enough to make you toss up lunch (but close).

So far engine wear appears limited to the valves and turbos.

Looking good Dino, wouldn't think that there would be that much carbon build up on the piston, looks brand new...what did you clean it with???

Im tossing ideas around in my head whether to replace the rings on my TT motor or not, only have the heads and sump to pull of.
Will have to speak to the Wiz soon to clarify a few things with engine and rod bearings.

Keep up the good work Dino.:zlove::zlove: Almost forgot to ask is this all a DIY project??

Not fair! Where did you get the Wurth calender!?!

  12. DinoZ

Probably a combination of running rich (no EGR) and oil coming from the turbos. Cleanup was soak in petrol and stainless steel wire brush

So far yes. I will be taking the heads and turbos up to Eric

Also one last question, what bearings are you using and what grades?

    Thanks Matt.

Ok, so we are a little behind schedule. (That's the engine bay for those having trouble focusing)

Picked up the hoist from Gav last weekend  and it's now patiently waiting in the shed for me to put it up.

Got to meet the people at Competition Coatings in Brisbane last Friday and costed out the parts that will be ceramic coated: Exhaust manifolds, turbos, dumps, plenum, pistons and valves - all up about $1,700.

Most of the parts have now been ordered through Coz, have decided to keep the stock turbos and have new centres on order. Going with the 750cc injectors that fit the stock rails and adding Nistune to handle the maps (need to get the group buy happening). Have picked up a pair of larger SMICs from BrisZ. Planning to run at 16psi.

Waiting for the standard abrasives porting kit to arrive so I can get stuck into the manifolds, heads and plenum. Have already got stuck into removing the casting slag from the water galleries in the block.

Need to drop the auto box off for a full rebuild including stage 3 valve body and new torque convertor.

Transmission now away being rebuilt. I think the new mount is long overdue. Note the black lines throught the dirt on the LHS: That is the rubber completely torn away.

Height difference between the old & new mount is 15mm.

You are a very lucky man Dean. Lucky in that you live so far from me. Finally got the hoist eh? - sensational!:thumbup:

Inlet valves are quite worn but exhaust valves still have a lot of meat on them. Have a complete set coming and will replace them all.
A lot of build up inside the exhaust ports and also a lot of staining on all the valve seats.

Have started on the porting work, will get some pics up next week.

PS to Angrybear: If you need to get your hands dirty you know you don't need an invitation. ;)

Picked up the parts today that had been ceramic coated (Competition Coatings at Archerfield) and then stopped by Eric's (a2zed) to have the turbos put back together with new centres. I wimped out and also got Eric to fit the new rings on the pistons (ring spreaders do make it an easy job!). Thanks.

A few before & after pics

Also stopped in to meet Greg at GSL Rallysport and picked up some new rotors

And just for Chrispy (it is March ;) & still "wurth" it)

Also many thanks to MagicMike for letting me jump the queue today. I hope you came back from the tune run without losing any points.

Now to get stuck into putting things back together.
