Haha, maybe I just jinxed you by thinking about it, so like, 900-1000Nm and they pop? If you go to the drags you might want to look into fancy axle shafts like all the guys with GTR diffs run, billet aluminium or chrome-moly or whatever's the new hotness.
Can't put a figure on it ... Too many variables ... It held on the dyno in 4th R230 should be fine ..can't be that unlucky . .
More about running over US1000bhp than luck, although now that I'm looking for it I can't find the examples of people snapping GTR shafts so maybe it's rarer than I thought. The R230 should be more than fine of course, I was just thinking about the shafts.
Z32 tt and gtr shafts are the same thickness and plenty strong, guys pull wheelies on them. NA shafts though.......
BDE VTC and broken camshafts I'm a bit late to the entire discussion so I would first like to address a few comments I've read so far... I'm quite certain nobody needs to worry about my BDE gears breaking their camshaft(s) anytime soon. I've rebuilt almost 1500 VTCs since 2008 and an epidemic of broken camshafts hasn't happened. Very sorry to disappoint, but let me explain my reason for not balancing: Nissan didn't balance any S2 (Late) VTC when they were new and the parts that I add are all 100% machined and located concentric to the assembly, so any increase of imbalance would be negligible compared to what it was originally. Please read below for more. Yes, it is a shame. I'd like to offer my side of the story... Let me explain what a BDE VTC is. It is a stock Nissan part that I disassemble, clean, check for internal wear and scrap worn parts, black oxide coat, replace main spring, replace o-ring, and install BDE retainer. All parts are interchangeable, but I do mark them during tear-down and 99% of finished pulleys have all the original internals married back with their original main hub/cog. The Early (S1) VTC have six holes. Other than these six holes, the S1 pulley is 100% machined by Nissan. The holes are not machined and are a leftover from the forging process. They are not concentric nor are they consistently sized, both of which would most definitely affect overall balance. I have found roughly 1 out of every 100 S1 pulleys to have a factory drill mark for what I assume to be balancing purposes. The Late (S2) VTC is a two-piece design with a forged steel, machined central hub and a powdered metal outer cog. The powdered metal cog is only machined on the center and face for hub location, other than that, every other surface is as it came out of the PM die. Its thickness varies by roughly 0.003" to 0.005" depending upon where you measure. I have never found a S2 pulley with evidence of factory Nissan balancing. In addition, the S2 pulley has 0.002" to 0.004" clearance between the center hub and the outer cog (this is a factory Nissan machined clearance, not BDE). With the VTC installed and when the adjuster bolts are loosened, this clearance will undoubtedly allow the cog to be forced off center by whatever the clearance is and affect balance. My point is, balancing these parts was not exactly a huge concern for Nissan and condemning me or my rebuild process for not including the additional time and cost of balancing is unjustified. There may come a time were certain builds warrant doing this, perhaps Rob is already there, but I cannot justify balancing all for the few applications that may need it. Rob, the reason I told you I cannot guarantee another pulley would be better or worse is because I do not want to get into a pissing match with a 3rd party machine shop about balancing when I have no chance of defending myself on the spot. I don't want this single post to get too long, but one last thing I want to address is Tech@EPR mentioned the VTC bolts are different lengths, this is correct, the Early S1 used a short bolt that measures 1.980" under head length (UHL) while the Late S2 uses a longer bolt that is 2.210" UHL. I have to imagine that many, many '90-'94 owners have used a short bolt with an S2 cam when they switched to aftermarket cams based upon S2 cores but retained their original S1 pulleys and short bolt while using the JWT spacer, so I don't think this scenario presents much of a problem. The worst case scenario is using a long S2 bolt with a S1 cam and potentially bottoming or jamming the bolt in the camshaft's threaded hole.
And to follow up on Brett's post - my cam pulleys where modified stock not BDE's when my cam snapped. I was incorrect, I had bought his gears but for my street car not for the race car. Street car is running fine and well over 400KW since I put them on in 2009!! Why did my racecar cam snap - probably lots of abuse and they were on their 2nd engine and had been modified as well as being over 20 year old. Not sure why Blackbeast's snapped. I am planning on purchasing a set of the cam pullets from Brett for the race car in the near future. Just wanted to set the record straight.
Hi Brett My conclusion pointing to the gears only came from a process of elimination because the only thing that was common is the same S2 gear on the cams in 2totally different engines . I will say that the new gears I have on are actually smoother/quieter in operation . End of the day its a mystery to me as it doesn't make sense . I've had mine balanced now just as a precaution . .
Little update Beast now has had the PPG box put in . Had it at the POWERCRUISE earlier this year for the 3 days ..drove to and from each day Car performed flawlessly running at 26psi all weekend sitting on around 700rwhp (makes 500rkw (670rwhp) @23psi) First day (Friday) it was deadly with the R888'S drifting in 4th on the straight next morning fitted same size mickey thompsons 315/30/18 and it was a whole different car :br: Finishing off a few little things like splitter and going to have some track days 6 speed sequential would be amazing on this setup https://youtu.be/ct3ANoS8sgo :br:
Where's the like button :zlove: Wish I'd known you were going I would have come out for a look and say Hi. BTW can't play the video as 'private'.
Why have you not shared this Maybe I'll have to tag along next time, give them a zed blackout Excuse the pun How's box holding up, got a feeling that's going to be my next weakness.. Have to catch up soon when I'm up as per our discussion
Box is strong and C/F tailshaft is taking a beating . You will more than likely blow 3rd gear when you make more power/torque.. .
Don't say that !! I need it to hold for at least 7 more months lol Good thing I don't tune on 3rd gear hahahaa Guess we will find the limit of the VG box then hey, I have a 98+ model trans. See if it handles a bit better See how the tail shaft holds up also.. Given it was only rated to around 450rwkw
