Hey all, Thought it was about time to start my build thread... After the fiasco with Red Rocket (rear ended instantly after completion) I thought I had lost all motivation and drive for the Z32 but my Z32 fetish had just become dormant for the last year... The mod beast reawakened about a month back and I've been on the hunt for a Z32 ever since. Needless to say, theres nothing around when ur looking for one and it seemed soo many bargains had passed hands in the last year. Upon beginning the search, I couldn't believe the pos's there was to choose from locally and all asking big $, so had to bide my time and wait for something worthy or just plain cheap to do up. After a few weeks of searching, managed to find an ad for 2 300zx's (same place) in the Quokka and went for a look. Zed 1: 1990 Auto TT complete with engine. Stock, matt black rattlecan sprayjob, average rims, bent radiator support, most panels dented, not running but mostly complete. Decent exhaust. Zed2: 1991 Manual TT, no engine, box in excellent condition and appears to have been rebuilt or at least pulled apart at some stage, re-trimmed interior black/grey (neat n tidy) magnaflow exhaust, a/m cats, adjustable front camber arms, head unit and speakers, most of the car was straight and paint was good apart from the front end. Apparently the car was run off the road into some scrub and the front bar, front quarter panels, passenger sill, washer bottle, carbon cannister and passenger side sill were in pretty bad shape. Paint is in great condition and looks as though the car was well cared for prior to the little mishap. Settled on a price of $1000 for the two. Bargain! Arranged the transport and got them home last weekend. Zed 2 was to be the project so I got to work straight away pulling the panels off to inspect the damage. Surprisingly, the only damage to the body was to the headlight support and passenger sill and it was very minimal. The Reo bar had taken the brunt of the impact and will need to be replaced and well as the washer bottle, carbon canister, front quarter panels and front bar. Pics: Front end: Drivers side: Passenger side: Damage to headlight support: Considering I will be running side skirts, the passenger sill wasn?t really a concern. A piece of wood and a hammer sorted out a light crease and the door opens and closes perfectly. All lines are 100%. A local friend of mine had offered to pull the headlight panel straight with a bit of heat and a chain block. Old school panel beater and did a fantastic job! Pics to follow shortly. I rang the transport department and the vehicle hasn?t even been written off. It is 100% registerable! Got in contact with the seller, organized a receipt and the original auction papers to provide proof of ownership. With the fairly clean bill of health on zed2 it was time to check out the engine on Zed1. Connected a battery up, she turns over (good sign!) but won?t start. I could smell fuel and hear the pump so fuel delivery was ruled out. Pulled coilpack 1, cranked her over and no spark. Borrowed a spare PTU plugged it in and she sprung to life! Woohoo! Engine looks as if it has never been boosted and in the engine bay all appears to be stock/untouched. Lifters were a little noisy but the oil was like water :-/ Ran her just enough to get the temps up and compression tested. 150-160 across all cylinders except 1. Was reading 180! Figure it was carbon build up and after a peep down the spark plug hole, it seemed pretty sooty down there. The next day, popped the plug out, sprayed a little crc and carby cleaner down followed by a little oil the day after. Turned it over a few times by hand then ran it until warm. 150-160 across all cylinders! Time to pull the engine for a freshen up! The original idea was to keep it fairly stock with a few small mods to keep the costs down. How quickly that all changed? Stay tuned...
welcome back to the game mate! gonna keep this same colour or is there panel and paint in its future?
Cheers Rosco! Keeping it the same colour m8. Have a pretty good idea as to what i want it to look like when its done. Should be pretty beasty!
Hoping for around 10 weeks dude. Gonna take a few days off from work to play with it and get things all sorted. Gotta do a list up with Coz to freshen the engine back up, bypass, new hoses, few clips etc. Panels and paint might hold things up a little pending on whether i go for a respray or just replace the front end panels. As the rest of the paint is almost immaculate, considering just replacing the front panels
Few more pieces added to the parts list: Bomex side skirts 95 model harness + S2 cas Haltech ECU (to be purchased upon completion)
Manual this time. Bloody hope it lasts a little longer than the red one too! Hanging out to get the engine on a stand and give a little love.
Glad you're back bro. You were missed. Those black powder coated hard pipes you mentioned - they the ones from US eBay? How's the finish?
haha cheers guys. Still waiting on the ic hoses Anti. I'll let u know how they look when they come. I would have gone for silicone hoses but after seeing them in action, I opted for hardpipes...
Well now... This would have to be the shortest build thread ever! Pulled the carbon canister and overflow bottle to find the chassis is bent! Meh, on the bright side, i'll make my money back and have a few parts. But seriously faaaaarkkkkk n #@$%@#$%#@%@$# Son of a #@!$%^^$#% #@@#% ^@#%#@%%#@ Sigh.... Back to looking for another zed...
