Hi all forum members, questions about the auto transmission. Firstly is it possible to take out the transmission without taking out the engine? Secondly, would it be a better idea to rebuild a transmission that has a problem of slipping into 4th while its taken out or take it out and replace with a second hand transmission. Also what would be the costs of doing this?
    Thanks

I had to get a transmission replaced in my n/a Z last year.
I got it done at work so it was up on a hoist. Exhaust had to come off and then we dropped the box out.
I decided to just get a second hand box from an R33 Skyline and change the bellhousing over as I didn't have the money to re-build the one that was in it. All up by the time I purchased the transmission and got it serviced and swapped over, including sorting out the differences in wiring because of the different models, it cost be about $1,000.
The main challenge I found at the time was finding a 300ZX auto... I could find twin turbo ones (RE4R03A), but finding a non-turbo one at the time was impossible.

Check and replace the trans fluid before replacing anything.

also look at getting the auto ecu serviced and or replaced as well before swapping in a second hand trans.

I don’t know exactly the sort of issue you are having, but sometimes the solenoids go bad. If you have Conzult or the ability to check the codes on your Transmission control module, that would be a start. Also check the color of oil.
A year ago I had my transmission reconditioned (original auto four speed) and I severely regret it. The 350z transmission is a common manual to swap into it if you don’t mind manuals, skylines, the Supra tranny, and certain Infiniti models, I believe the G35. You have a lot of options. If you don’t mind making your car unoriginal then I would definitely do a transmission swap. If you do a 300zx manual, I’d say you may even increase your resell value. Most people don’t want an auto. Plus, switching to a manual would make diagnosis’ much easier since you are taking a computer out of the mix and have more control. Sorry for the late response, I’m new here.
