Great reading, thanks. On the coolers, I believe the radiator type usually used for engine oil coolers are more efficient, they can also be mounted to vent into wheel wells rather than into the engine bay. And of course thermo fans mounted on the coolers could be used to aid low speed cooling.

Hell yes Alex, well worth it. Out of all the stuff I did, the shift kit was by far the best value for money.

I actually had it fitted 18 months ago with no other mods, so I got to know it pretty well before I went nuts and did all the other upgrades.

Thanks 260DET, keep the ideas coming :)
Every cooler manufacturer claims that theirs are the most efficient, I got mega confused while trying to choose the best type :confused::confused:
In the end it was the size and shape of the coolers that dictated what type I bought. At one point I was thinking about mounting
them at the rear of the car with fans on them, and maybe venting the rear bar. So the 4" high coolers were attractive.

Have you seen DinoZ's rebuild post number 43? He's mounting a single cooler at the rear, keen to see how that works out.
I think he's on a similar mission to me, doesn't want to send more heat into the engine bay.

I wonder if there are any transmission shops in QLD that sell the stage 2 kit for our cars? My cooler is no where near as large as yours, its mounted to the back of the radiator so the air drawn thru the radiator pulls air through the tranny cooler as well.

    hi mick

is the a reason why you went with a 3g converter? with lock up
this is still the stock zed box still 4 speed yes ?

this is an awsome thread, thanx heaps for taking your time on posting everything i just read the whole lot and it was a great read.

ive got the same mv auto stage 2 shift kit on my auto aswell i love it. also got a trans temp gauge hooked up and an external cooler.

my ext cooler is still plumbed alongside the stock one in the radiator, i kept it this way so that the trans fluid could some what get hotter quicker on start up and also incase the ext cooler wasnt getting any direct airflow (stop start traffic) then it was still running through the car radiator... alot of people say its not a good idea to have the stock one still plumbed up, but the way i see it is if you dont have a problem and your auto is not spitting out shit then you wont have a problem...plus if your auto is spitting out that much shit then that is a problem in its own... mind you ive had this setup for like 4+ years i think...

ive also got a 3k stally here but its not installed yet, its just sitting in a box waiting to get installed but im hanging to see it in there but wont be doing it soon. ill be doing it when i take the eng out...

only one thing im scared about is how much power it will hande

"Stage 2" might just be a term that MV Autos use for their kits, I've also heard them described as progressive shift kits.
There are definitely auto workshops in QLD that can offer something similar or better. Didn't Pexzed have one in the yellow Zed?

Alex, when I was searching for ideas about where to mount a tranny cooler I found one of your posts and thought it was one of
the best ideas of the lot, putting the cooler behind the radiator so as not to compromise the engine coolant temps.
And since you have an aftermarket radiator with no ATF heat exchanger in it, the heated air coming from the radiator would help
to warm up the ATF quicker in that configuration.
Plus, when you are caught in stop-start traffic on a hot day and the radiator's viscous fan clutch locks up you get a lot of air pushed
through the ATF cooler when you really need it. I LIKE this :)

But then I got too clever for my own good and started re-inventing the wheel :p

Its true what you say about not compromising engine coolant temps if you mount the cooler behind the rad, but its cooling ability will be severly reduced, radiator off air temps could be 70degC so that wont cool oil down too well that will be 110 say

    Nice write up mick,

Sounds very similar specs to the box about to go into my zed, although you seem to have gone even further than me lol.

    Full ground up rebuild
All new solenoids etc, kevlar belt, 3k stally with lock up, full manual valve body etc.. should shave a bit off my E.T :zlove:

I will hook up some form of trans temp gauge soon to monitor ATF temp to see how my current setup is working (or not working ) before i give the box too harder time.. pending those results i may have to look at increasing the size of the cooler

Current cooler setup (before it was finished and back on the road):-

Hi badxtc :) Reason for the 3K converter was to be able to launch with more boost :D
Never owned a turbo car before, hate lag, the 3K converter seemed like a good idea at the time.

    Lockup clutch? Yes. Love it.

Stock box? Yes, Jatco RE4R03A box, same as the Nissan Patrol ones. They're a heavy and power hungry box but I've
come to understand that they're a good compromise between tough and streetable.

4 speed? Yes. But I'll mention that with a properly working lockup clutch it really feels like a 5 speed transmission.
Not trying to challenge or annoy the 5 speed manual owners here, just my observation of my own set up :)

Chad the inspiration. YOU are the one who got me started with auto transmission mods, after reading your posts about
shift kits and coolers and MV Autos. So THANK YOU Chad, from the bottom of my wallet

Stock ATF heat exchanger in the radiator? I think it's a good idea to keep it. If you're worried about debris settling in
the bottom of it over time, it's real easy to flush it out with some solvent and an air compressor.
One reason why I bypassed my stock heat exchanger, I'm about to replace the stock radiator with a generic 56 mm one.
Figured I might as well set up the plumbing to the coolers in readiness for the new radiator, which has no ATF heat exchanger.

How much power will it handle? Are you asking about the stock transmission as a whole?
Chad, I think we both respect Michael at MV Autos. He's accurate and honest with his advice, a good and helpful guy who has
worked on a lot of TT Zed transmissions over the years.

His rebuilt "stage 2" Z32 TT transmissions are guaranteed to take enough power to do 10 second passes repeatedly and reliably.

( Forum member s_t_r_e_t_c_h in Puckapunyal has a built MV box for sale at the moment, real good price :D )

As for a safe power figure for a stock transmission? Adam at ATS Automatics who did my build kept telling me to stop spending
money on unnecessary bits. He felt that the stock set up with a shift kit would easily handle the high 12's I am chasing, no
need to go silly with bigger this and better that.

( I ignored his professional advice but we still get along quite well :p )

I know what your thinking Mick but they aint both AT cooolers in situ  :(... One is engine oil the other is ATF, soooooo i may have to lower that bracket i made to run a bigger AT cooler.. "pending temps" of course :p
maybe swap the 19row for 25row and see how it goes, I wont know whats needed till i hook a trans temp gauge up:rolleyes:

    very nice work .

i must say tho . with the 3 g converter, you know that you will be on stall at 100ks yes? this means you will have to drive in 3rd gear to lock in.

even with all the cooling in the world its going to get very hot..

is this a steer car or drag car ..

yes having a 3 + g converter will help you take of good ( mine did with a 2.5g con )

in mine i had all the goodies just like you , big boost all the crap etc etc .. went really hard and well ..

i would like to see how you will go with the 3g . on the street ,, up till now you have done a great job and looks like it will be a crazzzzy auto just a little worried about the 3 g .

you can not keep them on stall or they will blow up ( its like slipping a clutch ) . the gears must alway be engaged , not on stall.

it seems you concentrated on the launch and not on the engine cruse speed @ speed and that's where its going to start getting really hot ..

going under 3+g converter is shit , but you need to think about the cruising at 100k as well .

    just my 2 cen

Won't make a difference dude, If its the same as mine (lockup) it wont be on stall at cruising speeds.
There are two stall speeds; flash and load (or actual). Flash stall speed is what you get when you just mash the pedal from a stop without using the brake. There will be a split second where the engine's RPMs rise, hold, then rise again. This is flash stall. Actual stall speeds (like the ones typically used) are the speed around which they hold the engine if you hold the brake and floor the pedal.
A bit different with old skool boxes without lock up but Zed box has a lockup in its standard form, As long as the converter isn't massive you should be able to maintain the lock up function no probs and the AT wont perform any different to standard at cruise speed (maybe 100-200rpm more at 100k) untill you hold the brake and mash the go pedal and end up :br: down the road

lol i was going to say wow ur welcome but when u brought up the wallet comment im not so sure i should be thanked lol

this is true, when i get my engine taken out i will be getting a bigger radiator which also doesnt have the stock heat exchanger in there so i will be going solo aswell. ive been scared of this though, as one of my mates said that stop start traffic in hot weather killed his auto box as no direct airflow was getting to the cooler ...

yep im curious to know how much power the stock box will handle and also a built box. see alot of people can claim 10sec passes, etc etc but the problem is it has not been done... some say stock boxes could handle somewhat 240rwkw some say built boxes can handle 300rwkw, but hey i could also say the box could handle 400rwkw lol words are just words... the only person i know of that had some good power was mr0300 although i dont know much about his build, box, power, and car usage... there was a member sugar or something that had a good box which he used for the drags etc but that had a fully manualised shift kit, this aswell alot say the box will handle alot more with a fully manualised shift kit... guess we can only see what it does hey ...
