Just putting it out there while i try and do more research in the techy section....

It seems the zed needs re-gassing, apparently according to Trev he says that gas is now banned and have to go to the next one... whatever that is... and therefore will need to get a new air compressor...

Could anyone point me in the right direction as to where to look in tech section, advice as to where i can source a new compressor from to get the air re-gassed and working again.... tyvm in advance :)

Your best bet would be to take it to an aircon shop first. They can try to pressurise the system and find out exactly where the leak is coming from with a fluorescent dye. You may find that your compressor is not actually faulty, as they have a low pressure cutoff switch to stop the compressor from being damaged if there is not enough gas in the system. Chances are you probably have a leak somewhere instead of a faulty compressor.

In regards to the gas, the original r12 refrigerant that would have been in your Z has now been superseded by the new r134. There have been issues retrofitting r134 into an r12 system so look into one of the many r12 alternatives. Freeze 12 or freeze 30 (can't quite remember the name) I believe is a popular natural? alternative. Just a mix of propane and butane basically. Any good air conditioning repair shop should be able to advise you on a good alternative refrigerant. If they want to refill your system with r134, or try to scare you into thinking products like Freeze are any more dangerous than r134 (won't get into details here) simply walk away. I've heard people in the industry refer to it as the killer gas before as it is renowned for killing compressors designed for r12.

Last but not least, make sure you get the drier replaced while the ac system is depressurised, though any good ac shop would know that is a given.

compressor doesnt require replacing for the upgrade.
From memory, its the receiver/dryer (cylinder about the size of an aerosol can) located underneath the nose panel, the rubber o-rings and the tx valve.

Alternatively, if the system is without leaks, you can get it the factory system refilled with the above-mentioned gasses, as well as Hychill. Personally found than the R134 upgrade isnt as efficient

    You can still get R12

You can get R12 if you know someone, there are a few industries that were exempt I believe. The one I know of is Stevedoring, as alot of other countries still use it so they need it if a refrigerated container from abroad needs a top up etc.

I believe there is a non CFC R12, its not exactly the same but its pretty close.

Thanks for the responses so far... i have to find a reputable Air-con guy up here in FNQ tablelands or Cairns to get it done.... sounds like i also need to ask a few of the locals who they would recommend.

The compressor in Silver died too, maybe because they are brothers/sisters. It seized so I had to cut the belt.

I got a used one off the forum and took it to the auto electrician. The did the conversion to the new gas and changed the compressor at about $750.

Just the conversion to new gas should be about $400 I think

It gets absolutely freezing now, not that I need to use it much in the rain though

For what it's worth - my compressor packed up about a year ago. I got a good used one from a wrecker for $250 and had an Auto Aircon place fit it and re-gas it for $357.
