The Geelong Speed Trials was an event that used to be held on the Geelong beach front foreshore area. It ran for many years but has been absent for the past few. But it is back and is now known as the Geelong Revival. It runs over both days of the weekend and is split up into contemporary cars on Saturday, and historics on Sunday. It is a great location for an event like this due to the excellent spectator view point on the hillside all the way along the 1/4 mile track. Here is a view of the start line from about half way down. The start line is behind the 2 guys in orange: It really is a great except for a few minor things: the track is not straight (it has a sweeping right hand turn at around the half way mark), it is located right next to a beach so sand on the track is a problem, and that for all but a week of the year it is a carpark with speed humps etc bolted onto the surface. So excellent for viewing, but not so ideal for competitors. After Bib Stilwell crashed one of his cars at one of the previous events, there are now heaps more concrete barriers. All excellent safety precautions, but it sucks from a photography perspective. Anyway, on to the pics!!! Pete leading his group back into the pits after his first run... Wykked representing 300zx's tearing it up... Just some of the variety of cars attending... RedZedMikey's fav car of the day... The cars run in groups, and at the end of each group they return to the pits by driving back up the track... This car was doing runs with kids from the Make-a-wish foundation... And now a few static shots... This is possibly one of the more intriguing cars attending... It was a great day of motorsport combined with catching up with Pete, Jen, Mikey & Jack. What more can you ask for?
Thats Conveniant, the 300 gets 300 as its number. I checked it out briefly on my way through to uni. Loved the Red Corvette sitting up on the lawn in front of the Yacht Club. Didnt take my camera though
great pics col. liking the variety of cars there. that shelby daytona is a replica right? how did wykked do in his class?
For a minute there, iwas wondering he was going to drive in reverse. what an interesting car/vehicle :br::br::br: lol
Not sure how he did in his class - hopefully he'll post up in here, but his times were very respectable and was in the minority who reduced their times every attempt down the track. As for the Daytona, I'm not an expert, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was real. There were I think 5 of them there and I would expect that some were real and some were replicas. And I believe the yellow GT40 was reals also...
A few more pics... Pete going out on one of his runs... Looking back down the pits toward the finish line... Pete flying...
Went down to the speed trials on saturday, fantastic to have them back again, saw Wykkeds Z do some good times, a formula 5000 i believe did the best time of 10.2 seconds which is pretty awesome considering the lack of grip people were getting off the start hopefully these pics will work
Those are some great pictures Col and it was really good to catch up with you and Mikey and Jack. With so much time between runs it was really great to have some people to chat with. We really got the pick of the weather on saturday, with sunday being overcast with patches of lite drizzle. Unfortunately all those great looking Cobras, Daytonas and GT-40s were all replicas, the Daytonas are made by combing a carbon fiber body with a late model corvette chassis and drivetrain. They are very lite and quick, although I did manage to beat one of the two in my class so maybe he just wasn't trying. For all the results you can check out the Geelong Revival website. I didn't get very many pictures and Col, Mikey and Mark have probably taken better ones then I have but I do have video footage of the last run. [yt]9DomHqPoXYs[/yt]
Daytona is a replica buily by Daytona Sports Cars down on the peninsula, company owned by Richard Bendell of MoTeC - the car pictured is garaged in Ballarat, was owned by Tim Hendy but not sure who owns it now.
Great pics guys. Looks like a very interesting location. I have a strange question for you, Peter. Can you show me how you've mounted your font tow hook/loop? I have the same bumper and want to do similar.
