    hey lads

my Z seems to have died...like not even the hazard lights come on and nothing happens when i try to start the car

i thought maybe the battery was dead so i got a brand new battery, put it on but still nothing, same problem

absolutly nothing works, non of the lights come on and when i turn the key to start nothing happens

battery is brand new so i dont think its from that...wiring maybe

ive checked all the fuses and their ok

Do you have an "earth"? Try putting a jumper lead from the NEG terminal to the plenum, and see if it makes a change. Have you checked the fuseable links near the brake booster? Do you have any immobilizers fitted(they could be isolating the power)?:eek::zlove:

seconded..... check the alternator, that might have had its last breath and if thats the problem you could either get it rebuilt or buy a brand new one... again..if thats the problem...might not be

yeh i have an alarm.....with 2 point immobilizer to answer chilis question

but how can the alarm have an effect on the whole car?? ie not make the hazard lights work

edit, n00b question: the battery only charges while u actually drive the car yes?? like if u just start the car on the spot it wont charge

That is correct. Cant remember what revs it does start to, something like 3000 rpm

    Could be ....

that the ignition barrel bits have fallen out of the back of the barrel.

This happened to my maroon Zed. The back of the ignition switch that the electrical plug fits on to is plastic and held in place in the ignition barrel by 3 "nipples". As the barrel is a very mild alloy, these "nipples" were not holding it in well enough and it fell apart. I merely put it back together and repunched the barrel where the "nipples" are. I had to do a follow up repair at Phillip Island and zip tied it to the steering column to support it.

I would have expected normally that this wouldn't occur suddenly, but sag over time with accessories being the first to fail, but anything's possible.

Easy to check, just remove the tweed upholstered panel under the steering wheel (4 x phillips head screws).

    Cheers,

    Peter

Even if the alternator was dead, putting in a brand new fully charged battery should still allow it to start. Check the terminals themselves for the battery and clean if necessary, a round edged file or wire bush works good...
