Hey gents, I'm thinking of getting a one piece tail shaft for my auto TT.
    Thinking either Aluminium or steel.

I can get an AL one filled with sound deadener from ebay here: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Shaftmas...hash=item236af11642:m:mJ3quorR20EjMK98tQoCghQ
These guys also have their own website and it seems they do a fair few of these units.

Would it be cheaper to purchase here in AU?

How much are TT tailshafts going for nowadays?

    Anyone know?

    Thanks
    Peter

    Ended up...

buying the ebay unit in earlier post.

As usual, I will get back on here to report how this turns out.

I got an alloy 1pc for my 2+0 manual TT about 12 months ago. Shaftmasters brand too iirc

Mind you, I got mine from ebay too. I was probably ripped off and I'm sure any expert I would have talked to would have told me not to get it.

But I haven't had any problems with it what so ever *touch wood*. It felt A LOT lighter than the steel one. My main reason for getting the 1pc was to get rid of that centre bearing once and for all.

I think the only problem I had with it was there was not much room for existing bolts. Hex bolts wern't going to fit, so I had to get some socket head cap screws. (alan head bolts). I also had to trim the side of some washers to get them to lay flat and also cut my bolts a little bit shorter so I could get them past the knuckle joint and so the didn't foul on the opposite side. I also wasn't able to tighten them with my alan head sockets so I had to use an alan key with the ring end spanner trick. Professional, I know lol

Should do a good job for you Peter; they're a reputable brand.

    Thank you Bobbs

for the useful post. I will pass those comments to Shaftmaster b/c that does not sound like plug and play as they make it out to be. Unless if they have changed their design from last year.

TTs use allen bolts from factory for the diff input flange so probably not an issue.

I can't remember exactly as it was over 12 months ago, but the issue was with the flange wasn't turned down far enough to allow clearance for the bolts. It was only a 2mm step or so but still needed a flat surface for the bolts to sit on. Had to cut 2 layers of washers back almost into the shape of a C (but not all the way through obviously)

I think it was a pretty common issue, but I could be wrong. Ask em and see what they say. Caused me a headache at the time lol

The flange on the shaft will sit inside the cup on the flange on the diff. The washers can foul on the raised edge and give a false torque reading (ie feels tight but not really). I believe this is fairly common with tailshafts that use a rear universal joint, easy fix is to machine a flat edge down one side of the washers.

    I have passed...

bobbs comments on to Shaftmaster for consideration.

After all, it is classed as direct replacement and a cut above the rest it seems, so it needs to be just that, else it's false advertising.

I'd be pretty annoyed if it isn't plug and play and I have to muck around trying to get alternative screws to fit it.
The issue is, a slight vibration after that and you start to question the installation rather than the item itself.

It will be interesting to see how it fits.
If there are issues, I don't think anyone will be interested in purchasing from them. I wouldn't.

So, I will report on it once fitted.

Well yes and no... it's an aftermarket part that uses a slightly different coupling to factory. The only way to avoid it would be to reuse the CV off your existing shaft, which is another option... Z1 do something like that HERE with the option to pay core charge or return your old CV. Personally I would rather buy some m8 socket head screws than reuse old joints.

I'm of the same thinking as you Rob. Use a new CV not a 26YO shagged out item. But they have to make sure it fits perfectly, else they should state in their advertising that some new bolts will be required and they can provide them as part of the package.

its really not that bad lol.

just get a box of washers, chuck your grinder in a vise or find a bench grinder and spend 10 minutes making some dust.

i guess you could say its not a 'perfect' fit... but I guess thats the price to pay with after market stuff. It functions perfectly fine when fitted.

Alternatively, you could give it to a mechanic to fit it for you and let em worry about it.

    Hey guys...

This is the reply I received from Shaftmaster, already!...
    This should abolish any uncertainty.

    Hello Peter,
Shaft comes with new "socket head" bolts and washers.
    Flange is thicker as well.
We have not had the issue with flanges from this supplier in quite a while.

    Happy!!

I want my 10 minutes back lol

Mine didn't come with any bolts or washers... so looks like you're in luck :)

Glad to see I'm not the only person who enquired about this then.

I'll report back once this is fitted.

    Hey Peter,

I got my Shaftmasters tail shaft around 3 years ago, and when it was being fitted up, I had UAS machine the bolts for me to get them to fit properly.

Can't remember exactly what the issue was, but hopefully they've fixed it.

Overall, no issues at all with it, and the build quality was fantastic!

Unfortunately, I had to remove it when I put an NA diff in my zed :( Ended up with an Inland Empire shaft this time around.
