Adjustable Rear WIng?

Any engineers out there, or google searches know where and how to set up speed and brake adjustable rear wing like this R35 GTR.

See how it automatically flattens out at higher speed, and kicks up when hitting the brakes on the dyno. I would probably set up on my car to activate when hitting boost button it flattens, as I only use this on the straights, and then kick up when hitting brakes, with a relay of the brake switch.

What I don't know is where to get a quick acting preferably light weight and strong, electric piston or hydraulic or pneumatic operated pistons? Any ideas would be appreciated.

See video about 12 posts down.

Jason had something similar. Have a search for his old posts.

If I was doing this I'd use an electric stepper motor. It would save you the hassles of getting a hydraulic or pnuematic source. They seem quite cheap too http://www.futurlec.com/StepperMotors.shtml

I could write the control software for you but the warranty would be 5000K / 6 months and would expire on the day.

    Best of luck,
    Evan.

    option 3

Why not do a mount off the rear suspension so under hard acceleration the body squats down with a bar going up to the front edge of the wing pushing it up making it flat and under hard braking the nose goes down the bum comes up which would pull the front edge of the wing down again making it any air brake. No wires, hoses etc and as it is a race car who cares if you drill a hole in the boot lid and floor. Just my idea, if it works:biggrin:great and if it does not I will tell the little voice in my head it was wrong.:bash: Cheers Mark.

The most ideal way would be for it to be computer controlled. Under certain conditions it can vary between its complete range. Get the range of the angle limits between zero and its critical angle. Then program a chip with that can vary the motor controlling the wing accordingly. The critical angle will vary with speed aswell. To ensure it remains of full use, it should all be tested. Hire an aero CAD guy for the critical angle range vs speed for the type of wing.

Speed, Throttle and Braking would be you likely imputs.

Match it to when you require the most downforce vs min drag.

It can be a very in depth project if you make it. The results could be very worthwhile i would guess.

Jim Hall had adjustable rear wings on Chaparral Cam Am Cars in the sixties. The driver controlled the wing angle with his left foot.

Sounds like an awesome fun project...would love to draw up a system that could be economical and effective.

Might be time to buy a cheapy GT wing to play with :p

Some good ideas and I did not knwo APexi had a system, although no good for my wing. I have the control sorted I just need the mechanics.

The Apexi one uses a G sensor so it would be able to set up a percentage adjust based on negative G's.

As far as setting it up with to work with your boost button on straights, I dont know if it can take external switch, but it can be set up for speed that's for sure.

Cached info from above broken link:

Sounds interesting for $1500 if its still available the wings have been discontinued.

Check this out the split wing option is even better as it kicks up the right side when turning right to stabalise the car. Watch this vid and see.

    That's awesome

Setting it up to work from G-forces as brisz said is the way to go.

it almost looks like the wing is on a loose pivot that moves with the car.

If not Is that an option??

But this same idea was tried back in the 60's on an Open Wheeler at Warwick Farm.
    It was BANNED by CAMS.:banned::banned::banned:
The reasons given at the time where, it presented a danger to other competitors in the event of an accident. The fact that it could move, made a case that it was not fully rigid/fixed to the body, (as perscribed by the rules) of the vehicle.
You only have to look at the recent case of Team Vodaphone & their Splitter.
You may get away with it at club level, but at any sanctioned CAMS event, I'd say you wouldn't stand a chance in hell of competing.

    Cheers
