was having trouble fitting hte gearbox today. doing it from underneath.

Then got rained out so couldnt keep trying. Just after some tips or advice on how to do it. Or any way people overcame problems.

Had a trolley jack on the front and the stock car jack for tyre changing on the back of the box. Car on two jack stands at the front.

Got the gearbox shaft into the flywheel hole but couldnt get it in far enough to do up any bolts.

you have to tip your engine back a bit to get it in nicely and easily...

    clutch lined up

when u put ur clutch up did u do the bolts up evenly and with i pilot shaft to make sure everything was lined up?
I have found this to b the best way to get the clutch sittin nice.
Also lose the jacks they make it hard to get the angle right because the gearbox has to be in line with the engine so ur clutch plate and pressure plate line up with the spigot.
Is it the right spigot bearing in the flywheel im not sure what sort of bearing they use in the 300 but is it brass make sure it didnt crush it as i have done on cars before.
If it is a proper bearing make sure it is not cocked in the flywheel this will definatly stop the shaft going in.
Finally get the car high enough and bench press the gear box to get it in u may need a friend to help and tell u up down and all the get a nice even gap as the box goes in.

    hope this helps mate

the engines tilted back easily enough. when i put hte clutch on the bolts were done up evenly I think (although by hand with someone holding the crank pulley with an extension bar)

Done know if I can get the car high enough to get under it. But I could give it a go with the bench pressing. Feel like there wouldnt be enough room though.

think theres a problem. I dont know a whole lot about the gearbox and clutch and all that. So dont flame me if ive done something real stupid.

This bronze bearing youre talknig about. I remember there being one on inside the n/a flywheel when I took it off. It crumbled out.

But when I fitted the tt flywheel and clutch onto the engine this weekend. I dont remember there being any bearings. Just a hole in both the clutch and flywheel. Wheres this bronze bearing thing meant to go? In the centre of clutch? or flywheel?

Im assuming ill have to get one of these bearings. Can I fit it with clutch and stuff still on? Or do I have to take all that stuff off again?

ok I had another look and attempted fitting again this morning. The bearing is still there intact in the middle of the flywheel. Just on the end of the crank.

    Everything looked ok.
How do I line up the clutch and flywheel? Im going ot take it all off tomorrow morning and make sure it lines up ok.

Was considering getting my free nrma tow to get it to the mechanic, just to fit hte gearbox for me. But then realised I cant actually move hte can with the gearbox on hte floor underneath unless I lift hte car reeeeaal high which i cant or remove hte engine again which i wont. So it looks like im doinbg it myself.

The crumbling bronze was the spigot bush which is located inside the crankshaft. Not sure if the TT box also needs a bronze spigot bush, if it does get a new bush for it.

The clutch needs to be aligned to the flywheel/crankshaft with a special alignment tool, though some people just use a bit of wooden broom handle. Can get an alignment tool from somewhere like supercheap auto for around $40

Have you looked in the tech section? check out the "how to" on clutch replacement etc.

In short you are probably doing it right - sometimes it takes ages.

It will not go in if the clutch disk is not perfectly centred with the flywheel before you bolt up the pressure plate. Make sure u use a proper clutch centring tool to ensure this alignment is correct. Once you have this done well the rest shouldnt be too hard.

It's just a matter of wiggling it in. Try slightly different heights, wiggle side to side untill it goes in. If it still won't see above again.

To allow ease of install you need a jack to support the gearbox about its balancing point. I do this by attaching a sturdy piece of wood to a standard trolley jack. Or you can buy or rent a transmission jack if you like.

There is no quick trick to it. Once the clutch disk is perfectly centred with the flywheel the gearbox will go in after some gentle persuasion.

Don't forget the first sandwich plate before you attach the flywheel and the second before you bolt the gearbox to the engine.

Follow this article and you should be fine http://www.ttzd.com/tech/clutchtech.html

    Enjoy

Thanks a lot for all this guys. I didnt know I needed an alignment tool and didnt know about the brass bushing thing either.

Ill buy the tool and have a go. Also ill check if the bushing is there or not.

Hard to tell if that is the spigot bush or not best way to tell is to measure the hole and then measure the end of the input shaft to the gearbox. If the hole is 2-3 mm bigger than the shaft size then yes you need a spigot bush.
If you do need a new bush then the VL commodore turbo 5 speed ones fit perfectly and you wont get a new one from Coventry's or Nissan, you are best going to Holden.
    Hope this helps, Andy

yeah I got the alignment tool just havent done it yet.

Hopefully thats the only reason the box didnt connect.

Although the camera angle isnt aligned either. Well see.

mm well something hasnt been working im just trying to narrow them down one by one.

Alignment tool will take the clutch centering issue out of the equation
