    hI GUYS ITS ME AGAIN......

I POSTED A THREAD A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO ASKING FOR HELP! AND IF ANYONE KNEW WHAT WAS WRONG WITH MY CAR....

TO GET STRAIGHT TO THE POINT.... I STILL DONT KNOW...

ALOT OF PEOPLE WERE TELLING ME TO CHECK THE ECU CODES.... AND AFTER FINDING OUT WHAT THE HELL THESE WERE I NOW HAVE...

tHE CODE THAT COMES UP IS "12" WHICH IS MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR. dOES THIS SOUND ABOUT RIGHT??

I HAVE BEEN DRIVING THE CAR FOR THE PAST COUPLE OF WEEKS WITH NO PROBLEMS.... IM SOO CONFUSED... SEEINGS JUST A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO THE CAR WAS PRACTICALLY SHI**ING ITSELF...... REFER BELOW FOR DETAILS...

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT I CAN DO TO FIX THIS??

ARE THEESE CODES RELIABLE??? IF CODE 12 IS COMING UP DOES THAT MEAN THAT THE AFM IS STUFFED AND NEED TO GET A NEW ONE???

OR COULD THERE STILL BE SOMETHING ELSE WRONG WITH THE CAR?? BECAUSE I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO DRIVE IT AROUND FINE LATELY..

IT ONLY STUFFS UP WHEN IT WANTS TO.

IF ANYONE HAS ANY IDEAS OR CAN GIVE ME SOME ADVICE ON THE ECU CODES THAT WOULD BE GREAT

    tHANKS

hERE IS MY PREVIOUS POST FOR REFERENCE:

    Please Help Me!!! hI EVERYONE.....

JUST WONDERING IF ANYONE HAD ANY IDEA ABOUT WHAT IS WRONG WITH MY ZX?

I have no idea what the the problem is and neither does any mechanic i take it to....

Just recently when driving at about 100k's or less the car just started to lose power and gradually drop down the revs until it came to a stop......

Even when i put the foot down it goes no where... just jolts and gradually loses power, i struggled to get home. stopping and starting about 50 times.

But then a few days later i drove it it was fine! nothing wrong with it.

So then i took it to the mechanics and he said it sounded like the fuel fump was on its way out, so i had a new one fitted, and a service etc...

After this the car was fine again for a couple of weeks... i thought the problem was fixed,

Until last night the same thing happened again but much worse...

I was driving on the ballarat road when all of a sudden the car just started jolting and revving like crazy!

Then if i tried to accellerate it would jolt and lose power, until eventually it would just stall.

Then if i tried to start the car straight away it would start and then stall again.

When started at a standstill, the needle on the RPM meter fluctuates between the 2 and 3 really fast as if im putting my foot on and off the accellerator really fast but i didnt have my foot on the pedal...

Then if i try and take off the car really struggles... i have my foot on the pedal but it isn't going anywhere, just sometimes it kicks in and goes for a bit and then loses power.

However i have driven the car at other times with out a worry.

Does anyone have any idea what this could be?????

It cant be fuel pump or battery cos i just had new ones put in and a service..

If anyone knows or has the slightest idea please get back to me!!

    Cheers

could be a loose AFM connector or intermittent problem with the AFM itself. that would explain why sometimes its ok and sometimes it isnt.

THATS THE PART WHERE IM CONFUSED

i have checked the afm and the connectors, they are clean and they arent loose......

if the code is coming up as 12 then that means the afm needs replacing???

I accidently disconnected the AFM once when playing with the ecu. It had the same trouble you are talking about (starting and stopping ect), i decided it wasnt drivable so didnt try though as it was in my driveway.

Remove it, spray carbie cleaner into the middle wire of the AFM and clean all the contacts you can. If it is still stuffed, find another one to swap with to diagnose the problem. Im sure someone local to you on the forum will be willing to quickly swap over AFM`s to absolutely diagnose the problem.

    A 2nd hand AFM goes for $200-$300.

When it is turned on, does a bit of smoke come out the exhaust and smell totally rich with fuel? If the ECU decides there is no AFM signal, it will flood the thing with fuel to be safe that it is not lean as to not destroy the motor.

sometimes you have to reset the codes don't you? (haven't worked with either of my cars ecus in a while but often you have to do a reset sequence) This will indicate whether there is still any fault with the afm, or if it was an old fault that is still in the ecu's memory. Maybe it got wet one day? Or a faulty connection somewhere down the line, as fleet said?

Ohh yeah thats right, it will need to be reset.

Without a PC to reset it, you can leave the battery disconnected for a few hours / or i think turning it on and off like a dozen times resets it. Dont quote me on that last one.

the battery idea is probably the easiest. I remember there was a certain series of things you had to do to reset it on my pintara, such as holding the revs at a certain point for a certain amount of time? But i can't remember

    resetting codes

ok that sounds like a good idea.... but how do i reset the codes???

i am tapping into the ecu from the part near the hood release (if you know where im talking about) not the part under the passengers seat floor..

    Am i doing this right??

So if i borrowed someones afm and put it in mine to check.... would i have to reset the codes before i check the codes again with the working afm on the car??
Otherwise would the old codes still be in the memory and still coming up with the same code ?? they stay in the memory for 50 starts dont they?

And if i checked the codes with the working afm on the car and it came up as code 55 ( nothing wrong) does that mean that mine is stuffed and need to get a new one?

is this a good way to check? ... like are the codes a good way to diagnose my problem??

i'm pretty sure there'll be a way to reset it without a laptop. Disconnecting the battery for a while should work i think. Even if you attach a new afm it'll still give the same code i think unless you reset it before hand. Best to try with yours first cos it seems to be working fine now.

Just disconnect the battery. 10 minutes should do it, but 30 minutes definitely will. The code will be from before, it stores them until it's reset.

The easy way to reset the codes is to put the paperclip into the diagnostic port three times. It's easier than mucking around disconnecting the battery.

And next time please don't use caps lock. Makes people angry ;) Well it annoys me anyway
