Im so angry with my ZED, probably why I havent been on the forum for a long time. I have had nothing but trouble with my ZED since the day I bought it about 2.0 years ago. I always get everything fixed when I get a problem with it, but there is always several problems showing up not long after. I have had done a few major repairs, many minor repairs and I still dont get a healthy ZED. But for some reason I just cant let her go, what should I do guys, keep her or sell?

You post leaves much to the imagination about what has gone wrong.

There is a point in your life when you have to cut your losses while your still sane, for my parents it was when I turned 19.

I am inclined to say keep the car to I guess keep within the status quo with the atmosphere but you'll have to reassess why you bought the zed in the first place to decide whether it goes or stays (and if you end up buying another to replace)

Not to get all philospohical on you or anything but yeh sometimes life gives you lemons its what you choose to do with those lemons which makes the difference.

    Edit:
    P.S
It wasn't really a story more of an informative blurb

    well...

I've had my zed for 6 years. In that time I have gone through 2 engine rebuilds and a shit load of little repairs on items that just age due to normal wear and tear. Not to mention all the money I have spent on items that I wanted to either enhance or change (ie, bling)..:) And after just another weekends work I fear that I have another major repair coming up soon, the details of which I will keep to myself at this point until my suspicions are confirmed. And on top of all that, I have a TT engine in my garage, waiting to be pulled apart and rebuilt to go into the car....

so for me, zed ownership is not about just having a car. If it was just that, I would buy a more practical, newer car. No, owning the zed for me is a hobby. I spend money on it. I tinker with it. I pull it apart it. I put it back together and like all hobbies, it can be expensive. But its all worth it when you're crusing down the Great Ocean Road on a nice warm day, with the Targa roof off and your stereo in the back ground, and the underlying grumble of the V6 engine in the background.

After all the cash and heartaches, the zed is a keeper. Cant believe I say that sometimes with all the shit it puts me through, but thats just the way it is...:)

    Cheers

    agreed with the above post.

I am scared shitless about the fact that im buying a zed. I in fact wimped out of buying one in the first place and happily owned a 180SX for 2 years instead.

All cars have thier issues, and the 180SX was an awsome car to learn stuff on as easy to work on. So i think i did the right thing.

However now Im getting the Zed and while I have done my best to pick a good one, and paid way over my initial budget to get a good one, I know I can't escape the fact that it's an 18 year old car and there WILL be issues.

I have told myself (and my wife) that I see the Zed as a long term car. If something breaks and I can't afford to fix straight away, the car sits in the garage until I can fix it eventually. This is my toy for the forseable future and there wont be another until my "mid life crisis plan" when I buy a Ferarri Testarossa (true story hopefully).

So if you need your car as a daily and it's letting you down, or if you just dont have the passion for Zeds.... then i say sell it.

You need to LOVE the car. If you dont, then it's a waist of money pure and simple. The only reason to spend tens of thousands keeping a 18 year old car running is an illogical love for it. Beyond that it IS a waist of money.

So if the love isn't there, dont waist the money. Move on.

But if you do love it. Breat in, take your time, and do stuff as and when you can.

thanks for the posts, makes sense. Well I definatly love my ZED, otherwise I wouldnt have wasted the 7-10 000 I put into repairing it continously. The thing is, out of the 2 years I owned it, it has only been on road for a total of 7 months and not continously. It has always been sitting in different garages, a car is not what I need becuase I catch buses since Im a student. Its just that I work only on christmas holidays and all that money usually goes to my ZED, and I still have probably another 1000 or so to spend on it untill it is up and running properly and I am willing to do it, but alot of people think Im stupid for doing so. I guess if you love something other peoples opinions dont matter hey.

    EXACTLY.... to a point.

If you find yourself spending money you dont have. Or prioritising the zed above other expenses that you shouldn't.... then it's time to re-think life.

But while you can, keep, enjoy.

    only 7 to 10k?
Gee you are getting out lightly.
i had mine for over two years...mmmm...$18k+

and when i got mine it was in mint condition too.

just think when you get your ferrari....yeah no worries $200 for a service.....

    hahahahah not!

Only, my ZED is an NA auto and that 10k was on just repairs no mods, I think if it were TT 10 K would be feasable in that 2 years. I think I just had a few dodgy mechanics in the past also. Plus coz Im full time student money isnt easy to come by.

He's not the one wanting a ferrari... thats me.

And Im well aware of the $5000+ price tag on a service.

    I have a 10 year plan ;o)

    WhiteNight Littering and...

My NA is reasonably healthy, only after 17-18k worth of receipts on work done over the past 2 years from myself and the previous owner.

Another 3-4k should do for this year.

I would never recommend a z32 for someone without a passion and full time job.

I would be happy finishing with 240rwhp for an n/a. That costs money :)

I personally have owned my Z for 10 months... i know, it isnt that long compared to some.

But i havent't had many problems at all in regards to maintenance or the like. mines a 1989 model, and ive spent a grand total of $1,400 on maintenance (clutches and tyres dnt count, cos i KNOW that was my fault :D)

Apart from that, my Z barely has a glitch at all. even considering that it is my daily driver and is regularly driven in a spirited manner, the only things are the regular wear and tear that come with such driving and age

Like stated above, if you have a real love for the car and expect it to be a part of your lifestyle for a long time, by all means keep it and fix it. You will feel better that way

but if a car is a car to you, with its sole purpose to get you places, then sell it off...

but from what you said above, it seems as though it will be stayin in ur family :)

I would be happy if it would just run perfect for one day, spent so much on it. Im gonna take to a zed shop soon get it fully checked out. Anyone know if the Adelaide Z car is still around in Hackam.

I hear you mate, a Z is not a car to be bought lightly. Simply because its just such a beautiful car, both in looks and the way it drives.

I've been meticulous with my NA Z and have spent nearly 20k in two years just replacing and tuning all the tired old parts. I wanted to get everything perfect before i started doing power/drive train upgrades, i'm now at that stage but can't spend anymore money :(

But as most people have said, its a love affair, not a logical decision. One of the saddest decisions i've just made is to sell my car. Am currently getting it ready to sell.

My decision boiled down to, i can't keep spending money on a car i drive daily.

I guess the bet thing you can do is to put two scenarios in front of you. Then think where you will be one year down the track of both decisions.

Why i sold the 180SX i loved so much

Also you have to remember... this will NOT be your last car.

I loved my 180SX to bits. Still have a HUGE pro photo of it hanging on my wall. It was an awsome car and will stay with me forever.

BUt when deciding to sell, the thing that hit me was I have a whole life ahead and there will be other cars, better cars.

Sometimes you have to let something go, before you find out what the new (and usually better) thing is that life has in store for you.

For me..... it was a Zed :D

Totally agree there. We're about to have our first bub, and everyone who isn't into cars presumed I would be selling the Z, even my close friends. When I said no, we've agreed to keep it, they were amazed! But my wife (god bless her!) never even asked me about selling the car - I actually had to ask her how she felt about it and she really likes the car and knows how much it means to me, so doesn't want me to sell it either. Besides, if push comes to shove with finances, I'd sell off my teenage passion in the 90's - my U2 collection which is worth just as much as the car! :D

i've been pretty lucky with my car *touch wood* - only having to spend around 2g on maintainence and a further 2-3g replacing things that were a bit tired.. I've owned the car for about a year now and its spent about 9 months of that year on the road... as much as every zed owner hates to admit it, they do have a reputation for a reason.. and now that they are getting older it's becoming more prominent.

I'm preparing to sell my zed soon so I can buy something with 4 doors as thats what I need, and like ugame said the zed won't be my last car so theres no reason to be dissapointed... there are better cars than zeds out there!! (still love it though)

except for new o2 sensors, my 89' hasnt cost me a CENT for repairs.. just the usual maintenance, and mine cops a good beating every now and then..
owned it for 3 yrs now.. amazing isnt it?
had a couple of people told me it was a lemon, or a time bomb..
    proved them wrong big time.

  18. Benny_C

    Benny_C About as subtle as...

    Hang on a minute...

lets look at it from a financial point of view...

from what i've read above, you've spent a fair bit on it. and you reckon you need to spend about another $1000 on it still right?
Well on the money side of things, if it's in an 'incomplete' state atm where you still need to spend that $1000 on it then if you sell it you probably wouldn't get what it's worth being 'incomplete' - let alone recoupe what you've spent on it. You know yourself when you buy a car, the last thing you want the seller to tell you is that you probably need to spend about a grand to do this, this, this etc and then it'll be right.

So, if you wanted to sell it you realistically should spend that money so it sells as a good working reliable car that people will be happy to pay what its worth off you.
BUT, if you were going to get it to that point where it's all running fine then why would you want to sell it? - in that case you should keep your good reliable working car.

    - can you break down exactly what needs doing to it that makes you consider selling it? and pricing that you've been told?
Because in all honesty, $1000 is not very much money to spend on these cars.

Not to rub things in but I've had mine about 8 months, and I've had no major problems, and chose to fix a few little things early so they don't cause problems. Spent about $800 on repairs and services, and about $2000 on upgrades like seats, DVD player, Turbo timer, POD etc. I've had nothing but great experiences. Always runs perfectly!

Long term plans would be to ditch the VG engine for the newer LS1.
