    Hey All,

Was reading one of the posts earlier and i got me thinkin as it sounded simmilar to mine. At ilde my oil pressure drops and then she goes up to about 4 or more depending on how i'm drivin. The other person described somethin simmilar and it was somethin to do with squirter something ... sorry for the blazaa description ... Does anyone else have this ?? is it normal ??? car drives perfect . good response and good power ... ohh its a N/A 1990 Jspec

    Cheers

well mines an 89 na j spec, oil pressure is fairly high on start up, then when its warmed up it settles down a little under 4, if i start pushing a bit it goes up to just over 4, im not sure if this is normal either, but it seems abuot right and dont have any problems

yeah on start up mine goes right up too. I think that is "normal" if anything is normal for these cars at times. It was more of the drop under 4 like to around 2ish that was more of my concern when sitting at th traffic lights ect.

What is the normal oil pressure? Sometimes mine is 7 sometimes 4 and sometimes less than 1. It doesn't normally concern me as the car is running great, but should I be concerned?

I think the OEM oil pressure gauge is about as useful as the OEM coolant temperature gauge.
I think you are only too right to be concerned when you see an oil pressure gauge drop to zero or near zero. The key word here is concerned!!.
My suggestion is that the two most important aftermarket gauges to get in an NA would be a Coolant temp gauge and an Oil pressure gauge.
If a good quality aftermarket gauge shows little pressure above idle, then you have a problem.

mines on zero a lot of the time too , i guess its common for the Z .

take your oil sender out,get a really small drill bit and unclog the hole

My problem was a bit different , my gauge was accurate , I really did have no oil pressure , only when revving . If you have no oil pressure you will hear your lifters chatter , like that brief 2 second sound you have on a cold start until the oil primes up.

for an N/A, see zedophile's post in the other

"oil pressure" post .. he gives the acceptable range from his aus spec N/A manual ....

Oil pump spins faster when engine spins faster.
Cold oil is thicker than warm oil.
Therefore higher pressure on startup and at higher engine revs.

When engine is idling, there is not much pressure, and you don't need much pressure either. Under load at higher revs, thats when you need pressure.

Gauge is as mentioned not very accurate, so if it shows no pressure at idle, that would not necessarily be an issue. Look at the gauge when you are driving, not when you are sitting in a traffic jam. If it does not show a kg or so per 1000rpm, check it out with an external pressure gauge.

mine seems to have adopted a sort of 'memory'...

when i accelerate, it gains pressure as normal. what confuses me is that at certain speeds, regardless of gear or rpm, it tends to hit Zero at the usual cruising speeds (60 in town, 80 and 100 on the highway)

i havent found that there have been any problems however... i will question it with my nxt service i think, just to be sure :)

I thought multigrade oils were thinner at startup and thicker at warmer temps? eg 5W30 etc. the 5W would mean the cold temp and 30 the warm temp?
I've always been confused why cold starts meant high pressure when the oil was thinner at low temps... or maybe i'm interpretting it wrong...

    Hmm

I don't have much knowledge with oil, but my logical sense telling me that oil is getting thinner when warm. I thought oil expands when heated up and therefore thinner...
But again. I don't really know.

Sounds about right mate, i replaced my oil pressure sensor thingo and is now reading much the same

    4 on startup
    just under 2 when warm

Back up to 4 when under hard throttle

Sandeep. You are correct hot oil is thinner than cold but you have misinterpreted the Ratings. They are a bit to get your head around. (and a pain to explain) 5W30 Oil is a 5W (W meaning Winter) that when heated to 100 Deg will be as thin as a 30W at 100 deg.

So in comparison a 5W30 Oil with be as thick as a 5W40 oil when cold but the 5W30 will be thinner when hot. And a 10W40 will be thicker than a 5W40 when cold but will be as thick as each other when hot.

    Hope that helps
