    Cooked my motor yesterday,
Got it towed to the Z-shop Sunday night, They used to have a yard full of Z,s, but there was just a couple of old trucks in the yard, Are they still operating?
I'd heard that Lindsay hasn't ben well and wasn't running it at the moment.

as far as i know they are

but havent been there in roughly a month. your correct about lindsay being crook though but his son was running the shop when i was there & everything was kicking along as per usual.

dont let a lack of zeds out the front fool you either as theres was only a couple z31's out front when i was there but they still had about a dozen z32's floating around inside, perhaps they're just trying to keep the front a bit tider than they used too:rolleyes:

Just give them a quick call on 9885 3366 (i suspect you know it but just in case)

    cheers, tim

    Cooked motor

Overheated my motor, fairly sure rings are gone. Turns over but won't start.
Tossing up between a rebuild and a 2nd hand motor.
Any advice about which way to go? Unfortunatly I'm a bit strapped for cash at the moment. Would have liked to rebuild it with some nice pistons, bigger turbos etc

How badly did you overheat? Did you switch the motor off? I've seen some zed motors cop a whole heap of heat treatment and still truck on if you cool it down correctly.

    red32 You talkin' to me?

Cheapest option obviously a second-hand motor, although you have no guarantee as to the overall condition... it may run, but how strong is it?
Throw in the 2-H motor and rebuild the original at your own pace.

    Hot

Got it pretty hot. Oil temp gauge over 120c. Think the rings are buggared. Spins over nicely on the starter but won't start. Think its low on compression.
Does any one know of a cheap motor or halfcut for sale in Melbourne?

based on my own experience get a rebuild

chances of getting a good motor with decent compression is pretty slim now.
most people who sell 2nd hand motors have no clue what compression it has they say the compression is good and low kms etc. but they have no clue and are full of it. learn from my mistake..i got a 2nd hand motor was told it had 90000kms imported straight from japan. but it had low compression so had to do a rebuild anyway.. all i could get back was 1200 which barely covered the labour for pulling out the engine and putting in the engine.

if u r lucky u will only have to get a topend rebuild!!

xpenZive Car nearly all gone :-)

I guess it is a hard decision and yuo have to look at all variables, I cooked my motor not long after getting my Z almost two years ago, if I had my time again I would have parted the car out and saved a bit of extra $$ to buy a top quality $20,000-$30,000 Zed.

    My two cents.

    Z SHOP NEVER AGAIN

Hey Tim. (Lids) I used to be a fan of the Z shop. So was my son. We always took our car there. It was found that good parts were swaped on our cars and faulty parts were put in place. Our cars always had extra probelms they did'nt have after leaving the Z Shop. I took my car in for an elrecrical problem. After $500.00 in costs problem was still there. Was a loose plug in the crank angle sensor which i found the problem myself and fixed it. Too car back to him to complain. Asked me and my son to wait for him in his office. We waited for half hour. After a heated discussion, didn't get refund. Started my car. car started pissing out smoke from both exhausts. He told me my turbo's are blown that i have to leave my car there. Quoted me 5 grand to replace turbos. Couldn't believe this shit. My car was running fine never had this problem. Anyway to cut a long story short i drove out of his work shop pissed off. Car pooring out smoke. Pulled over checked oil dip stick. Either Lyndsay or one of his dodgy mechanics over filled my enginine with oil. Dipstic had oil 1 inch past it's recommended filling. So what happens too much over fill of oil. (SMOKE) Thats right. He tried to con me in thinking i had blown my turbo's. And would'nt let my car leave his worshop. After i threatened to call Police as he is illegaly holding my car (THEFT) he let me go. Don't be fooled by him! Lyndsay is a sweet talking CON MAN! If you haven't worked him out yet, he as got you fooled like many others. Since i am in Law Enforcement my self on this occassion i have given him the bennifit of the doupt. Next time he will be in the Magistrates court with me.

How long was it sitting at 120`C for?

Ive seen my temp guage go up and stopped maybe within 1min it was 3 quaters up so i pulled over and let it cool down and filled the radiator with water and coolent and no problem ever. So i dont know why your having these problems unless you let it sit at 120`C for 5mins or more. And on the stock temp guage how far up is 120`C?

Sorry, but I think your ignoring a bunch of other possibilities and going straight for the wallet. I'm not saying your wrong, but I'd do the basics first, compression test, fuel and spark, before you start shopping for 2nd hand motors and rebuilds. Just 2 cents. 120degree oil temp won't cook your rings, shit, we had Haylz car cooking over 150 easy too the point where it cooked the box but the engines good.

Get it looked at by someone else, sounds like this dude is a con man and after your cash.

Yes 120 is high but I myself have built and tested engines that run at 125 for 30 minutes or more and test fine. You might have picked up your rings but i would say the engine wouldn't turn over so well, the first thing I would go for would be a head gasket.

take it to another garage and get them to do a dry and wet comp test, if the figures change drasticly then yes rings, if not its top end and you may get away with just gasket changes.

Sounds like you have taken to this bloke and he's gone, Kaching $$$$$ all the way

    ZXSTEALTH - Please contact me!

Dear ZXSTEALTH (Sorry, I STILL don't have a name, which puts me at a significant disadvantage), I have tried to contact you off forum via forum email without success, hence this post, so in answer to the questions raised in your (now deleted) thread in relation to this issue:

    1. Am I a detective or trying to be one?
    A. Any diagnostician is a detective of sorts, but really, if trying to look into a job that has allegedly caused a major customer problem makes me one....?

    2. Your (sic) trying to locate me?
    A. I am trying to contact you to get more information about the issues you raised, so that I can look into same.

    3. Are you the proprietor of the business?
    A. Z Shop is a company, I am not a director or shareholder, but I am assisting with management consultancy on a pro-bono basis.

    Now to clarify position:

The story you posted deserves a response, and definitely needs to be looked into......unfortunately those currently at Z Shop have no knowledge of any issue as described, or knowledge of any father/son client with the father known as ZXSTEALTH. A name would at least allow reference to a job card to locate the history. You found me helpful.....believe me, I'm still trying to help!

You stated in your now deleted thread that I am employed by Z Shop as a mechanic. I am not employed by Z Shop as a mechanic. I work as an engineer, in two disciplines, and consult for Z Shop and several other high profile workshops as required. I also work in design of Emergency Services communications. I have had a passion for Z Cars since the 70's, and often assist when a problem (usually intermittent) needs more diagnostic support. I have an ABN, am a director and shareholder of several companies, have well over a quarter of a century experience in company and engineering management, am an Associate of an Australian University, sit on two Industry Advisory Committees, and have a keen interest in education and training reform.

    That said,
I do have an interest in Z Shop......not a financial one, but a personal one, as I do with the other stated workshops with which I consult. On that same level, a mutual respect for the people with which I work from time to time.

Aside from wanting to resolve your allegations, which are very serious, I see how posts such as yours can directly hurt the morale of genuine people working at these workshops.

In the case of Z Shop, we have Chester, who is managing Z Shop and doing his very best in terms of customer relations.

Mr Miyake, a japanese engineer (and now head mechanic), who is a perfectionist with a long history in Japanese motorsport.

Mich, another japanese mechanic, with an envied skill for getting his hands into those small spaces in a Z32 where normal hands can't fit.

Jamie, second year apprentice mechanic, with a passion for cars, highly regarded at trade school for his abilities. Automotive apprentices are in short supply in most areas btw.

Steve, a fitter and turner originally with a long history in 240/260/280z work, who has recently returned from an illness.

I see the work ethic of these people, and I see the effect on their morale with posts such as yours which allege that some or all of them are "dodgy mechanics".

In actual fact, they are just working in the automotive industry trying to make a living. The lack of new apprentices in the industry is understandable given the physical nature of the work, and the typical wages offered. The physical wear and tear of daily automotive work eventually takes its toll, too. (sorry, this is just a rant, but true)

Your story raises very serious allegations, and really needs to be investigated.

I'm asking you to help me to find out more, so that the current management can investigate, respond, and address the allegations as necessary.

An off-forum response would be greatly appreciated (please use forum email)

    Sincerely

    Bob

No need to know the content, but just whether he is serious about resolving this issue, or just being a forum troll.

If you find your engine has shit itself, and you haven't got deep pockets for a rebuild, call Itchiban in Sydney. That's where i got my 2nd hand engine from when i blew my first one up. Really good business. All engines are guaranteed to have under 90 000kms and are compression tested in their workshop in sydney. They gave me a copy of the compression test results and came with 3 months warranty on long engine. This engine is better than my original one, runs alot smoother. They ship Australia wide aswell, cost me under $3000 delivered. IMHO this is the cheapest solution if your looking to keep your Zed

    bleh Zshop is great.

zxstealth is obviosuly trolling. And he keeps blaming lindsay, even though he has been crook for a while now and hasnt been running the show.

His son is NOT A QUALIFIED mechanic and you need to be a bit more lenient. He is doing the best he can on just taking over such a big business with no notice/training etc. Fair go ey?

Instead of constant garbage and abuse, how about you contact bob to resolve the matter with the Zshop offline and im sure (AS ALWAYS) a peaceful resolution can be determined by all parties. The more you flame, the less chance you have on fixing whatever you are on about!

Im a loyal & devoted client of Zshop. Datzboy, im currently getting a rebuild (as soon as chester pulls his finger out...). My ring cracked on the dyno so i have to replace ring (but adding all forgies etc now) it would cost about 5000$ to replace the pistons (excluding piston costs) because of all the labour, to pull out motor, then strip it bare to take out the pistons and so forth.

Myaki will fix it up nicley for you. They are building a few bottom ends, so if you want to replace the engine, they can do that for you too! (like mine!) And one day you might also be able to copy the iceman and close in on 400rwkw thanks to Zshop! :D

    Hi BOB! Slap Chester!
