Is this PTU failure???

    Hi guys,
I don't know when the last time I wrote was, but I'm still alive if anyone was wondering!

So....I'm cruising along and then the car starts to 'hesitate' when trying to rev it above 2500rpm. I pull over and the engine WILL NOT rev above 2500rpm. It sounds exactly like 'injector cut-out', like the rev-limiter has been hit. I turn it off and wait a while and turn it on again and it still does it. After about 15 minutes, and a few tries, I turn it on, it still won't rev above 2500 and then I wait a bit with the engine on. It was idling fine. Then all of a sudden the engine just cuts out, without any warning or gradual drop in revs. I start it up again without any problem as usual and everything is working perfectly fine. I drive home and there was no further problem at all.

It's done this 'hesitation' thing 3 times now, all within the last week or so.

Could it be an ECU problem?
I don't know about PTU because it idles fine, starts fine and even behaves normally unless the accelerator is pressed hard enough to get the revs to 2500 rpm.

    Ideas?
    Thanks.

    Nope...sounds like AFM

ECU has a failsafe run of 2500rpm max when it can't get a signal from the AFM.

Clean the plug, if that dosn't work try another one

    Typical AFM fault

Check AFM connectors, run diagnostic test.

Is the AFM the MAS or different? 'cause I know where the MAS is but not

    the AFM.

...never done a diagnostic test before...would it take long? Is it hard?

    AFM. I've been there...

    Chech connector an loom first.

Diagnostic does not always pick it up. First time it happend it would not rev past 2500. Then all was fine for a few weeks then driving down the freeway got the bunny hops happening.

Took 2 months of driving and Conzult but I finally got it!!! Not cheep though so be sure...

AFM is located right after air intake...

Under nose pannel, behind airbox/pod filter.

    See Tech Index

    AFM/MAS = Air Flow Meter

Dan is correct, diagnostics do NOT always show failing AFM, but it's a start.

Yeh, I can't really muck around since I still do driving lessons in the zed

It's kind of embarrassing to tell the student pull over because "you're driving is so bad, the extremely modded ECU is telling you to stop in a nice way"...ok, I don't really say that, but it isn't good as an ambassador of zed supremacy!

    Some more MAS questions.....

Ok, so it's the MAS. When I unplug it, the revs are limited to 2500. I plug it in and they're fine, so...
If it's the actual sensor, would it be stuffed continuously, or intermittently as it seems to be, or does that point more towards the connector?
Would an intermittent problem indicate a loose connection rather than a stuffed sensor?
    And...
If you can diagnose it with the correct code, would it only show an error whilst the revs are actually in a state of being limited to 2500 or would it show even if it's driving fine?

    Thanks.

    Re: Some more MAS questions.....

I am unsure of the error codes, but a wiring or connector problem would likely give rise to an intermittent fault, and a faulty AFM/MAS would likely be permanent fault.

But faulty wiring or a connector could also cause a permanent fault, and I suppose a faulty AFM/MAS can also cause an intermittent fault, much like when your headlight blows, sometimes you can thump the headlight and it will work again for a short period of time.

I think it is best to check the connector as a matter of course. Clean the terminals on the plug and the receptor, and also pich the female terminals so they grip the males better. It's a start.

Thanks man, yeh I started with this. Now I've gotta wait to see if it

happens again during a driving lesson!
