Heyas Today my daily driver VK Commodore, was given a love tap in the side by a driver not paying much attention as he was exiting a servo. I have 3rd Party Fire and Theft and he has no insurance at all. I called RACV and they said they have clause where they will cover me up to $3k if im not at fault and the other driver is uninsured. That sounded really cool. So I took my car to the assessor and they want to write it off $1800 The damage is to the left fron quarter and the passenger door, but also pushed in the A Pillar a bit (main reason for the write off tag) Heres the difficult bit 1. The car was a bit shabby on the outside as I was prepping for a respray 2. The Interior was Mint. 3. 21 year old car with 70,000km on the clock 4. I inherited it from my grandmother who died recently from cancer I have no idea what to do, I really dont want to lose the car and I definatly dont want to write it off for a measly $1800.
Fix it Get another Guard and a door from a wrecker and your 90% of the way there, as your preping it for a respray anyway, doesn't look that bad from the pics, shouldn't be to hard to fix.
are you sure he had no insurance? I know people sometimes say that to get away. Have you got his details? If i was you id try to squeeze him for the cost of parts and labour. I suppose if you do the prep work yourself, you cold replace the door for about 100 bucks, get a quarter for about 60 and paint i usually pay 100 bucks a panel. so thats probably 300 bucks and 4 or 5 hours work on your part. Im sure you could get that out of the guy.
Re: Fix it The A-Pillar is bent down low and the door hinges are mangled. I figure its gonna be near impossible to align the door again. I dont think its as easy as you make out. If it was just a door and a guard I could do that myself np. Ill keep you posted on how it goes.
