Long time no post..... but whilst doing some other work on the zed over the weekend..... (got to be the ultimate post starter, working on the zed creates more work!)...... I noted that when I turn headlights on the left side (air con unit etc) instrument bulkhead lights up, but the right side does not..... I opened it up and found many little bulbs, and these were in good condition. I note that even the led for the rear demister does not light, and when tested, this is ok. Suggestions of where to next to trace the problem?

    cheers

    fuses

    kick panel fuses
take each one out, and test it with a meter.

Howdy APM. Long time no hear.

Had a quick look at a few cct diagrams, and it seems that your problem might be a few faults rather than just one.

Pretty much all of the instrument illumination power is via a red wire with a yellow stripe powered off the headlight switch, with a green wire with red stripe being the other wire for each globe, which heads off to the illumination control switch, to supply dimming.

The rear window demister light is on a separate circuit, geting power directly from the rear window defoger relay when it is energised, and earthed via a black wire (pin 12) off the defogger switch. Does the rear demister work? If it does, the illumination light should be on as well.

For you to have two problems in one switch cluster points to an earth problem, or a connector which is faulty.

Can't be too much more specific witout more detail, but I'd be chacking pin 12 of the demister switch connector to ensure that it is a good earth, and also checking the red/yellow wire on the switch cluster plug to ensure that it is getting 12 volts when the park lights are switched on.

    Hope that helps.

I'm trying to install something (EDFC suspension controller) and the install guide is asking for illumination power - do I tap into that red wire with yellow stripe?

I'm guessing the unit is lit up bright in day time so that u can see it, and at night time it dims so it's not too bright, and it is looking for that signal from the red with yellow stripe - anyone a bit more experienced with installing little dash displays than me? :)

    holy thread dig

pull out your clock plug, you will see 4 wires, use green/red

Blue/White is power from the Accessories circuit
    Black is the earth connection
Green/Red is connection to illumination circuit to dim the display when the lights are switched on.
Yellow is the permanent 12 volt battery connection
