I’m loving this concept, keep it up, I’m sure you’ll get some good results once sorted

Cheers, im keen to sort it out and run it at the drags.

Over the weekend ill be adding a few things to try and limit the amount of smoke blowing out. Ive just added a boost controller for the GT42 and removed the springs out of the quick spool valve.

Ok well im going to have to try a new drain setup, the pump just cant remove the amount of oil going through the turbo. Ordered a compact 45° drain so we'll see how it goes.

Well, seems the china choo choo boys seals are dead. I changed the drain to a 45° 3/4", put a catch can under the turbo and installed a 1mm restrictor but it just keeps smoking. My fault in any case, my original drain was a 90° then the line went almost straight up and my core was clocked in a bad position. This is the reason im happy i used an ebay turbo as it was only ~300 for a new core. Old core will be sent to hypergear for a gtx comp wheel and t51r comp housing.

Another thing to note is i need to up the boost on the GT42R, at 1.6PR it flows barely 55-56lb/min and a VG30 at 2.8PR total flows more than that. If i turn up the boost on the small turbos too high the power flattens off up top and im fairly certain this is due to the GT42 being pushed off its compressor map.

Next step after i replace the core is to play with spring pressures, im going to up the boost on the GT42 to 12psi or so and have the stock turbos at 12-14 for a total of 24-26psi at the intake manifold.

Right. Update time. I put a new core into the 42R and the smoke is exactly the same. We are now thinking that it has a headgasket issue. No oil mixing, no overheating just smoke and a slightly wet cylinder 6.

I have a spare NA motor so if it comes to it that one will get gaskets and headstuds. The question i have now is what to do with the compound setup, as there are three options.

    1) keep it on the new engine and refresh the stockers or add highflows/gt2560s.

    2) run rearmount only with a gtx3584.

    3) remove it completely.

My opinion, only because I’m real keen to see this thing go:
    Option 1,
Keep the 42, sort out some issues and run it.

My thoughts are once it’s sorted, it’s going to be a weapon!

A relative of mine who did all the fab work just offered me a great deal to build a single front mount kit using the 42R i have.. so if i pull the motor that may be the way i go. I built this setup because i didnt want to pull the engine to change turbos.... now that i have to pull it i may aswell.

    IB ?????

If it's just no 6 that's wet, then it might be a ring or ring land. So may have seen some detonation.

I was hoping you'd succeed with the compound set, it's very unique for a zed.

No detonation present, timing is sane and fueling is on point. The problem is white smoke and clear water coming out of the exhaust.

This engine never had amazing compression and has been at 300+rwkw for the last few years with uneven compression, auto cams and stock turbos that have 300,000km on them.

Just picked up a rebuilt RE4R03A box, apparently had 4k spent on it but i'll be servicing it and getting a manualized valvebody with a B&M ratchet shifter.

Ok so we did a compression test and a coolant pressure test.

    Comp was
    1: 135. 2: 135
    3: 135. 4: 130
    5: 130. 6: 125

Coolant lost 1psi of pressure after 20 minutes of sitting.

Ok so it seems the motor isnt completely dead, however the smoking issue has to be dealt with. Currently we are going to weld a pair of cats back into the exhaust and i am changing the oiling setup to the gt42 completely, it will be a standalone system instead of being fed from the engine.

So heres the new oiling system. The reservoir holds 650ml of oil and the pump shown feeds oil via a -4an line to the turbo with the T piece providing an "overpressure relief" as the feed has a 1mm restrictor inline. There is also a check valve in the feed to stop oil seeping into the turbo when its shut off. Return is a -10an line to a second pump and then -6an to the reservoir. Its noisy as all hell and im looking into replacement pumps to quieten it down but its working so far as a proof of concept. 20190903_182923.jpg

Quick correction. The reservoir is capable of holding 1.5L but ive only put enough to feed the turbo and keep the return free flowing.

So this is purely for the 42 oil feed?
Has it helped the smoke issue?

Yep purely for the GT42, tbh i havent driven the car long enough to see as im working 6 nights a week at the moment.

Ok well, it still smokes. Im getting over the smoking issue and may take the whole system off.

Also i recently bought an FGX XR8 making around 400rwkw.

Interesting stuff to note, is at very low boost 2-10psi the system is less efficient and i had to pull around 6-7% out of the VE map around this area. 14psi was 1-2% less but once 18psi+ comes around its dead on till about 6000rpm to where it leaned out. I added fuel around this area but it looks like my factory pump is on its way out. Lucky i have a new walbro 485.
