I've found a 300ZX that has had the spoiler removed and the brake light now at the top of the back window (where I circled).
Would it just be as simple as installing the spoiler again or would there be more to this? Like what about the area that should be black where the spoilers sits above?

Do you already have a replacement spoiler? It would be a lot easier to just swap the rear hatch over to one that isn't filled and to make your life easier, preferably one that still has a non bubbling factory wing.

How good a job have they done ?. If it looks alright why not just leave it that way ?. While mine has a spoiler and that's what I like I have seen a few without them and they look fine. The other alternative is to try and find a hatch with one on and get it painted. A bit of work though.

Alternatively get either of the two later model spoilers that mount on top of the hatch & don't need that recessed section.

Nah I'm looking to buy the car but would definitely want to change it back to stock. Wondering how much of a hassle it would be to find a rear hatch/cost as well. Trying to weigh up whether it's worth the effort because the zed is clean as anything.

Plenty of rear hatches available, someone might swap with you since that looks tidy, chances of not having to paint it to match aren't great though. Also the stock early model spoiler causes rust so you may want one of the re manufactured units from ionic dynamics rather than an actual original one, or go one of the later model styles.

thanks for the reply. I wouldn't mind sticking a different spoiler on it too, but I'm not sure I like the lack of the third brake light infill panel

Well unfortunately for that specific car, the easiest and cheapest option are replace the hatch with another one that already has a wing.

Since you like the infill panel look, the more expensive option to do it properly would still involve changing the hatch over to one that has the infill panel cutout and then buy the genuine Nissan third brake light infill panel and then add a wing of choice that sits on top of the hatch. This will probably involve some painting.

    Example:

I'm trying to find other examples of zeds with the infill panel filled in, but can't find much. Do you have any where it's painted liek the one I'm thinking about buying?

If you find a red LED bar you like the look of you could also just cut a hole in the existing in-fill, using LEDs doesn't play well with the stock brake light controller but I would guess the current window mounted light is LED anyway so the bypass is already sorted.

mine is filled in - but it really does not mean much as a comparison - I cant imagine someone just filling it with bog but maybe expanding foam then fibreglass if they were being a bit rough. Mine has a panel made and welded into the area so it would be a hell of a job to return it to a plastic infill panel, however I could easily put one of several spoilers onto it with no issues.

Do you mind posting pictures of your cars rear still?

What about the Twin Z Design type 1 rear wing, pretty close to stock, comes with brake light and will cover most of that infill area. Still need holes drilled though for wiring. If you're Lucky you might be able to find one here in Aus still because new from the states is going to be expensive.

Where are you located, I have a rear hatch here at gold coast with a good condition original spoiler and Brake light free.

I'm looking to replace the stock spoiler on my 1989 2+2 - if you have one in good condition I'd be interested.

I do have one but taking it off the rear hatch without damaging it might be hard. I was thinking if you didn't live far you could take the hatch and swap it out for yours, you might get a few years out of it but eventually water will probably get in and cause it to bubble and warp.
For the long run you might be better off going the infill option.

Thanks for the reply - sounds like better to go the new option but so bloody expensive from the US.
