i have an intermittent hicas warning light flash. It seems to happen above 6000rpm in 4th which is not the best time to be seeing warning lights. Steering feel does not change. Oil level is ok but race track was bumpy, maybe i could top it up a little more. does the warning light have any other functions beside low oil?

not sure but mine is always on.... another thing I have to sort for the pits.... my speedo is working 100% and my oil is up to the mark. no idea what is wrong.... I also have an abs faiure which may or may not be connected... again none of the regular causes

    Benny_C About as subtle as...

Do you have an aftermarket steering wheel? (if so, do you have the proper Hicas Boss kit?)
If your Hicas locating ring is off-centre or not spinning correctly with the steering wheel, it will also trigger the Hicas light at speed after a while. This is where i'd be looking, as the symptom fits the problem.

Yes I do have an aftermarket steering wheel.
Benny are you saying it’s an electrical contact issue exaggerated by speed and vibration or the vehicle sensing speed and this is triggering some peramiter? I have had an issue with a leaking turbo dropping oil into the electrical connector on the power steering rack. I think this had the effect of making the power steering not work at all at times. Since cleaning this up ( the connector not the turbo ) I have not had the same issue. I have not had the car up to these speeds before now so the current issue is new to me.
I’m sure nissan hicas could make me a better driver when new I’m a little scared that a malfunctioning old system might actually make me worse. If that’s possible

My experience with a misaligned steering wheels and hicas says that the light stays off, until you have driven reasonably straight for a period of time (like along the highway), then, the light will come on at the same time as the back end will kick, and then everything is normal (but with check light on) until next key off.

Consult etc will tell you if your rack is straight or not via hicas diagnostics.

Sounds to me like the fluid could be a bit low.

I can see my hicas lockout bar being fitted. Back end kick????? No thanks. I’m not sure I’m good enough to catch a Z that is steering like a forklift at speed all of a sudden.

I'm pretty sure that isn't your issue. Could be as simple as intermittent connection of the float terminals?

Connections. I’ll try that first. My light is just a quick flash not staying on. When the steering rack plug was oily it was triggering and staying on and power assist was staying off . It could sometimes be reset by turning off the ignition and restarting as magic mike says
