A project like that needs lots of time or lots of money. With the crank case and intake wide open like that who knows what has gotten into the engine. Compete rebuild, not to mention the rest of the engine bay looks like it’s been to hell and back...

Just buy a second good engine. No matter which way you go you have a lot of work to do. Its not just the engine that has been out in the weather for a year, its the whole car. Just looking at the engine wiring loom I can see many potential problems, sleepless nights and fits of depression. I see you are a new member! you will probably need some help from a local forum member. Where do you live?

Brisbane. Looking at my purchase options of whether to buy a tt donor then buy engine with upgrade parts / refurbished. Or working tt with updated ptu, water pumb, oil pumb, harness and mechanical fan. Haven't bought anything. Deciding which route to take. Money is the driving force

If you have plenty of time and mechanically minded, and you get it cheap enough, but either replace engine or full rebuild (rebuild much more expensive but then new engine) and fully strip the engine bay, most of the car and replace everything that looks shit (ie most of what we can see in the engine bay pic lol).

Or wait until a reasonable running/registered TT pops up cheap and snap it up.

Honestly I would buy a different car -as in a different Z. It will cost you more to get this one to any sort of acceptable level than it will cost to buy a running and registered car.

    Crazy. Absolutely crazy.

How people let this crap happen is beyond me. It reminds of an R34 GTR that a mate sent me a pic of a while back... Image-1.jpg

Why would a person be so negligent I wonder.

I think its more the crowd that buy the car for the image rather than actually having an interest or passion for cars, they have no concept of maintenance and once something goes wrong they cant be bothered getting it fixed so let it rot.

True true. Probs will have to buy off a knowledgeable owner for future reference

Its not about buying off a knowledgeable owner so much as getting someone that has owned, has worked on and has good understanding of what it costs and how much work it will take to get it to an acceptable standard ... to inspect the car with you. All of these cars are 25 - 30years old, so very few are perfect. Whereabouts in Brisbane?

The price you are prepared to pay will determine what Z's you'll have to choose from.
You won't find a reliable & well cared for Z at the bottom end of the market.

Yes, but if you've got a bit of mechanical nous about you, know what to look for, and have a bit of free time, you can often pick up something cheap that doesn't need much to restore it back to something that would have sold for double or more.
