    Update

Had some time over the easter break to complete a little project thats been on my cards for a while. I managed to pick up an immaculate oem steering wheel without scratches or chips. I was excited until I unwrapped the package to discover...

    rust..

I was thinking of getting the dremel out with a wire brush but since I had time on my side I went with the ol' steering wheel in white vinegar trick

it was starting to show results in a matter of hours.. I used the tooth brush to apply to sections where the metal wasn't submerged..

    end of day one..

so basically left it overnight and the following afternoon..

I used very fine wet and dry papaer to finish it off and then coated it on wd40 and left it overnight.
on the third day, I rubbed the excess off and whoolahh..

Bit of evening work never hurted anyone... besides, I was anxious to finally get this wheel in here..

Thought a brand new Z emblem for the crash pad would set it off right..

Thought it was also a good time to put in the new Z floormats too :zlove:

    To be continued..

I haven't heard about this white vinegar trick.
    Is it a trick?

So you are using acetic acid (CH3COOH), to remove iron oxide.
    Phosphoric acid is the trick.

I dont know mate, I just call it a trick :D

just used homebrand white vinegar with a 50/50 mix with water. When I took it out of the tub it would flash rust within a matter of minutes, so when the majority of rust came off, I wiped it down and coated in wd40. I left it like that overnight and the next day gave it a polish with metal polish and then recoated in wd40. I wouldnt have a clue if it is the correct procedure, I just know it worked

    I like your vinegar idea!

I used conc. Citric Acid to get rid of the rust on the turbo housings. After 24hrs of immersion, they came up looking brand new :)

But the vinegar looks like it works very well and cheap!

Lovely Z by the way. Enjoy :zlove:

    Yes that sounds about right.
The acid will get rid of the rust, but the newly exposed surfaces will rust unless coated.

Phosphoric acid also eats up the rust but converts the surface to a rust resistant coating. I think that is why they rekon Coke soft drink removes rust.

Quick Facts about Phosphoric Acid (Yes, that Chemical in Coca Cola)

Phosphoric acid is commonly used for rust removal.

Thanks bro. I like your zed too mate, very clean and original ;)

I honestly did think of Coke but didnt know if id had the longevity for soaking and I also thought about the leather that I didnt want to damage. I figured the vinegar was mild enough to do the job and not stain the leather.
