Hi, first post, sorry if I'm not posting in the right area.
I have a NA 300zx and am wanting to do an oil change, I'm just wondering what the best oil is and the oil any of you guys use.

    Thanks.

I bought a bottle of Penrite HPR 15-60 full synthetic as recommended by lube guide today.

Usually go Motul 10-40, but wasn't available.

Plenty of past threads covering this..

I wouldn't say there is a best oil. The best thing you could do is to actually change your oil and filter at every recommended service interval

Is your engine extremely noisy? Excessive mechanical noise?

Mine was and this forum advised me to use a castrol oil that was recommended for cleaning diesel engines. Castrol RX something.
    Fixed up the excessive noise.

I used it for a couple of thousand km and then changed to a full synthetic 15w60 and a higher spec rycol oil filter and magnetic sump plug.

    Warning

Only use full synthetic if you haven't used mineral oil in the engine previously, or you have a fresh engine. Mineral oil swells the seals, which is fine until you put synthetic in and the seals shrink causing oil leaks.

Just use the right weight and change regularly with the filter. Every 5000 on older engines typically.

    Never had a problem
Always use mineral to run emgine in and change to syn after .

The issue is more with the cleaning properties of semi-synths removing filth that's been sealing holes, good quality synthetics are more like to swell seals than straight minerals are.

End result is the same though, update oil and everything starts leaking.

I'm using Penrite 10W-40 Diesel semi-synth at the moment, was running the nice PAO stuff but $$$. Cams (lifters and/or gears, hard to tell which) got noisier with the swap but not sure on the exact cause.

Man I find it hard to believe that this is a common thing... I mean just about every Z32 (to narrow it down) would have run in on mineral oil. I dare say the majority (and I acknowledge I'm generalising) have switched to synthetic at some stage of their life without spontaneously leaking, although given the age and mileage there are probably more that leak than don't lol

This is probably the best advice in the thread. Correct viscosity and regular changes will have a much bigger influence than brand or any other marketing features.

Are people using different oil when running E85?

You need to make sure the oil is compatible with e85... Motul for example isn't, Penrite racing for e.g. is. E85 absorbs heaps of water, so any fuel that washes down the bore will contaminate the oil in the sump.
