300zx burning oil

    Received a yellow sticker yesterday for an exhaust emissions check, seems the car is occasionally burning oil and did it just as the police stopped us.

    As it now has to go over the pits I'm going to take it off the road to rebuild the car (this was always the plan anyway)

    Wondering if someone has any advise on where to start diagnosing the cause of this? I'm curious to know, though will most likely swap in a different engine when the car is rebuilt.

    Did a little reading so far and its was mentioned that pvch hoses can get blocked? is that true for a N/A?

    pcv valves themselves are often faulty. hoses can become blocked and junked up aswell.

    when doing a plenum pull they are always on my list to check and replace, very few z32's have them in good working order if the car hasnt had a plenum pull and all thje usaul dletes done....

    Remove the LOWEST intercooler pipe on both sides and see if oil pours out...

    Oh wait... NA? Probs rings :p

    How much oil are you burning? PCV valves are a common problem. Valve stem seals or piston rings. If its either of the last two then you will renew all three as part of your rebuild. Do a compression test.

    I'm curious as to why you got pulled over in the first place? :p

    I think the guys above are hitting it in the right direction. My first guess would be rings on the NA.

    Girlfriend was driving on a UK license so was flagged up on there ANPR for driving with no license.

    Had to the then drive to the house to pick her card up as she didn't have it on her, said they noticed smoke then did a full check of the car and we received a yellow sticker.

    I will strip the engine down at some point and have a look :) thanks for the pointers!

    Check the PCV system first. Quick and easy (well for a zed, and compared to stripping the engine down). Cheap fix if that's all that's required.

    How many k's on it?

    I will check pcv system out.

    Car has done 222,000 ks but I believe its on now on a second engine.

    222,000 kM is nothing if it is accurate.

    The engine should last a lot longer than that which begs the question to be asked........"Why would it be on its second engine?"

    Complete the check as Chrispy suggested & while you're at it, compression test the engine.

    I believe the previous engine over heated, there's an after market rad in the car which might explain why.

    The replacement engine looks like its be fitted by an idiot, all sorts of hacked wiring etc.

    for example the cars a 2+0 yet they have fitted a front screen wash reservoir which isn't plumed to anything :rolleyes:

    Bought it originally to strip down and put a TT engine in at some point so I wont be spending too much time investigating the issue but it does intrigue me to see what's failed.

    hopefully it will come back on the road better than ever otherwise it will appear in the parts section on here :rofl:

    The odometer may indicate 222,000kM however if it is a JDM, that may not be a true indication of the actual distance travelled.
    In addition the replacement engine may of travelled a considerable distance over 222,000kM.
    Perhaps the engine has done less milage than what the odometer indicates & overall it's a good engine.
    Complete a compression test, it'll give you an indication of engine condition.

    An NA with compression of 186 psi indicates the engine is like new.
    Compression of 142 psi indicates it's on its last legs.
