Is it common for the VTC solenoids to leak oil?

Ignore the turbo coolant leak ;)

Hey James I had mine leak before too.
Turns out it pushed the whole pin out the back and left a open hole for oil to come out while engine ran.
Could be the same for you.

    Are you sure it's oil?

The VTC gears have some black goop on them that melts and goes everywhere - it's not uncommon and doesn't really affect the operation of them.

edit: Sorry thought you were referring the the gears. :) But yes I have seen the solenoids leak oil before, not very common in my experiences

They can leak, but only if the internal has cracked/collapsed which does happen, but not that common.

They still require sealing with silicon where they seat on the back of the head which more often is the reason for oil in the area. Looks like that coolant hose needs tightening too.

Excellent. I picked up a used solenoid and some blackholez aluminum caps. Shame I gotta pull the plenum again just for a leaky solenoid.

Coolant line tightened ;) nice and easy working with the dumps out of the way.
