Going to vent mine, any one got picks of there modified ones ? Might get some ideas. Cheers Peter :br::zlove: http://s892.photobucket.com/user/RTE38/media/5032070007_large_1.jpg.html?sort=3&o=19
Vented bonnets are such a personal thing. Some look great while others are so so. I have a fibreglass vented bonnet and while I originally loved it now every time I look at it I think about putting the stock one back on. I think a stock one modified with a forward facing vent similar to the one in your photo bucket with a bigger bulge if done right would be a better look than the one I have with one large and two small vents. I have seen a stock bonnet with 2 side vents installed that looked quite good. Cheers Dave
A forward facing vent does nothing and just looks dumb on our cars. Go to the UAS site and have a look at the bonnets there or have a look at the Twinz Design ones.
This is how it's done http://www.aus300zx.com/forum/showthread.php?p=1394595#post1394595 -not cheap or easy
Slightly off topic, but has anyone ever seen a polished bonnet on a z32? As in, polished alloy. It might be horrible, but I kind of like the idea of the old school stamped louvres on a polished alloy bonnet. It would have to suit the car, but on something like that fighter plane themed drift zed....
Well its got to force cold air over motor, and as hot as that gets under there its got to be cooler :zlove::br: Did my Commodore, and I do 1600 km runs straight to Longreach made a difference to it:rolleyes2: but thank you all for in put :br:
Don't mind that,as I have a open nose front that with how yours is will work and thanks for pick :br:
It doesn't work like that. If you want cold air in you need to get the warm air out so as to lower the pressure under the hood. A vent in the front will do nothing except create turbulence.
I just read the article -not applicable as the forward facing z32 scoop is neither intake nor intercooling
My point is cool air forced in the front, must push some hot air away as it exits under the car, what ever car the engine bay has to be some what cooler.
Seems you would be more likely to create high pressure behind the radiator which is not what you want for cooling. You want air coming in low at the front and leaving high (Or at least not under the body) at the back of the engine bay or behind the radiator and you want more space for the air to leave than you have for it to enter so you keep the air pressure as low as you can in the engine bay to get the best airflow through the radiator you can.
While I agree a rear facing vent a la GT40 is better, a forward facing one won't do nothing. Aerodynamic theory aside the previous owner of my Escort bonnet saw 3* lower running temps with it fitted compared to stock. And I chased him for a year before he sold it to me; no need for exaggerated salesmanship. Forward facing vents look ten fold better though >: )
Dude, a forward facing vent pressurizes the engine bay which STOPS air coming thru the radiator UNLESS there is ducting behind the radiator to help air exit from the engine bay (usually out thru the wheel wells). The only exception is if the forward facing vent is channeled into the iinduction system - like the shaker in the old GT Falcons. I would not do it as it WILL make the engine run hotter because there is less air able to come thru the radiator.
remember its not just getting the air under the bonnet we need to think of - in fact the harder part is getting the hot air out. if you can achieve this efficently then it will allow the cool fresh air to flow in through the radiator (best way) and everything does as it is supposed to do.
These guys all know what they're talking about, creating a ram air scoop to stuff fresh air into the engine bay is a bad idea. If you want to do it because you like the look then fine, but don't pretend that it's a functional mod.
