    Hi People,

Just been having a think, I have an after market steering wheel so dont have any cruise control, so was thinking of using the button (on and off on the Pod) for something else, does anyone know if this is possible or not? If so is it easy (I an an electrical idiot)

Also whoever installed the steering wheel didnt set up the horn, ive had a look at looks like its missing stuff, any ideas how it works?

    Thanks in advance

Cruise control is great, why don't you fit the cruise control stalk from the 95 -99 models.
They had an airbag steering wheel so the cruise was switched using a lever (stalk) mounted on the steering column.
    Look up US sites, cheaper.

you can get a boss kit with cruise control on the boss kit itself that will work.

the idea above about getting a late model cruise stalk would probably work as well, however the us stalk is on the same side as our indicators so you need a aus or jap spec indicator/cruise setup.

or i geuss you could maybe buy a us indicator AND cruise assembly and have your indicators on the left......

Z1 sell RHD cruise stalks. Relatively cheap... $50 iirc. Do have to swap out 2 of the wires for it however, and cut a slot in your steering surround to accommodate it (5 min job)

Regarding your existing cruise buttons, yes, you can use them for something else, but your options are pretty limited as they only have 3 wires... maybe 4, and utilise diodes to send varying polarity signals to your cruise computer, which can be intercepted at the plug below your steering surround.

Perhaps a better idea of what you want to modify the buttons for will yield a more accurate answer. Alternatively, there is a schematic in the service manual highlighting how its wired.

    cheers

Forget the buttons etc I fitted the stalk

I bought one of the cruise control stalks from Z1 to insert my Sparco steering wheel and retain the cruise control function - bargain given they are new with fresh markings (doing button job mounts look tacky and are not functional!)

I now prefer the stalk to the buttons as its actually easier to use and quite functional!

The Z1 stalk bolts straight into the steering indicator collar so its straight forward

You have to reverse two of the wires when rewiring to the stalk though and you need to cut the section where the stalk protrudes from - easy job and looks good when done

Thanks for the feedback guys, however judging by the things I've already found out about my car (I have no air con, most of the engine was glued together haha) I highly doubt I have any of the cruise control system in the car. I do mostly city driving so rarely use it anyway :)

I'm just think about my gauges for the future, I want to have them on a separate switch to the head lights, so instead of adding a switch into the car somewhere I want to use the cruise control button.

This is what I have done.

I made the black one first as that was the smallest case I could find at the time. After a long search in the $2 shops I found the blue cases. It works. i have used it for the past 6 months.

I was thinking along the same lines but...

I wanted a project and came up with my design. Qldzdr is a much more OEM look. Well done.

Ha Ha Ha, I can't take credit for that.
I own the steering wheel, that's it.

I agree that (Blake's mod) the photo showing the OEM cruise switches does look as OEM as an aftermarket wheel is going to look, but I can't take credit for it. The photo was also taken by Blake :p

But this is an easy mod. You need some Styrofoam and a bit of vinyl, just copy the location of where the switch is positioned. It might be better to put it on the left, depending on your preferences.

    Sorry guys, another quick question

On the pod with the cruise control switches, if I click this to 'on' is something supposed to light up on my dash?

My new plan is to connect my boost controller to that so when i turn it to on, the goes to high boost and off would be low, but would be good to know if i have high or low boost running? The good thing is it would always reset to off.

    Yes.

    From the user manual.

To turn on the cruise control, push the
main switch on. The ON? light will come on,
To set at cruising speed, accelerate your
vehicle to the desired speed, push the
SET/COAST switch and release it (Type A).
or push down the cruise control lever and
release it (Type B). (The CRUISE? light will
come on.) Take your foot off the accelerator
pedal. Your vehicle will maintain the set
    speed.

Thank you for that, really need to get myself one of those, so nothing lights up on mine, you think thats because its been disconnected? Bad bulb? I have no electrical experience but you think it would be easy to rewire with just the switch?

    Thanks

    Cruise control fixes to try

Owners manual can be found at http://www.manualslib.com/manual/543406/Nissan-300zx.html
I have learnt when chasing electrical faults check simple things first. You say you have the Cruise switch on your pod.
    1) Did the cruise control ever work or did you just get the car?
    2) If you know that the car indeed had cruise control before the aftermarket steering wheel was fitted then check the Fuse in the driver side kick panel fuses. See the Cruise control / Auto Trans 10A fuse. Look at the tech section and search for " English translation for Cabin Fuses "
    3) If you get to this stage turn the ignition on (do not start the car) then press the Cruise switch on and listen for a relay clicking on and then off when this switch is used. If nothing happens at this step then check for the rubber stopper on either the brake or/and clutch pedal. Search the posts for "Cruise control not working" to see where exactly they are and what they look like.

Ask any electrical questions as i have many years of experience and have fixed my Cruise control also.

The Z service manual can also be downloaded to your smart phone from the Android play store. It is free, last time I looked.

    Alternative

I installed my cruise buttons where the warning lights for the auto transmission normally live.
Our car is a manual though and these lights are not used.
The buttons fit perfectly in the space, and do not look weird or butchered.
My wife loves her Momo wheel and I was not allowed to change the look of it when I installed cruise control.

I don't want cruise control, it's never really bothered me, but what I want to do is use the cruise control buttons (on/off) on the pod to switch between high and low boost. I just want a light to come on when I have switched it to high boost

I don't see any reason that will stop you from using the toggle switch in the pod for whatever you want. Just disconnect the harness wires and run new wiring.

Here is another location for mounting cruise switches with aftermarket steering wheels.
