What are the effects of disabling the Speed Sensor?

So I know this will affect the power steering, it will go into 'fail safe' mode and be heavier than normal at slower speeds. This is not a big problem as I'm planning to go with an electric power steering pump.

I've had a look at all the configuration settings and maps in a stock JDM TT Manual ecu (via Nistune software) and can't see anything referencing the speed signal other than the speed limiter.

Is there anything else that will be negatively affected by not having the speed sensor signal to the ECU?

Some background. I decided to diagnose why my speedo doesn't work today, and why there is no speed signal going to the ECU.
First thing I did was read the manual :p
So the simplest thing to test first was the sensor itself. So I disconnected the electrical connector and tested with a multimeter while I got the missus to turn the rear wheel - no signal. Faulty sensor right.
So I then tested the sensor in my spare gearbox - working sensor!
Removed the faulty sensor and swapped it with the spare sensor. No wonder it wasn't working lol!

Turns out the sensor is fine just the gear was worn away so wasn't spinning.
Anyway now I have working speedo and speed signal to the ecu, but the sensor has a clicking noise. Remove the sensor and have a look inside the box with a torch and mirror, two of the teeth on the drive gear have been slightly crushed, probably about 5mm square area, so I think the gear is jumping when it spins over this point making the clicking noise, no doubt also wearing out the nylon gear on the sensor.

I'm planning to remove the factory instrument cluster anyway, but of course the signal the ecu and the power steering computer use comes from the speedo, not directly from the speed sensor, so by removing the speedo I effectively disable the speed sensor signal to the ecu anyway.

initial thought is that the steering force switch on the rack wont work.

lol, you didn't read my post, I already know it will affect the power steering, but this has nothing to do with the ecu, this is due to no speed signal to the power steering computer.

I'm more interested in what affects it will have with no signal to the ecu?

not really related to your question, but if you're going to go electric PS route, in the interim, why don't you pull the pin from the solenoid at the rack? Will essentially bypass the PS ECU control, giving 100% assisted steering at all times.

The astra pump conversion that I've seen had to have this done anyway

    red32 You talkin' to me?

One of the things which will no longer work is your Cruise Control (if it's fitted).

Yep, but that's a separate computer/controller, not the engine ecu.

    I won't be using cruise control :p

I haven't had a close look at this yet but thanks for the tip :)

Will be either an Astra or Mercedes pump.

The only setting other than the speed limit that I could see in the factory ecu via Nistune was 'VTC Min Speed Enable' and this is set to 0km/hr.

Interestingly my Blitz ecu has this figure set to 8km/hr, so VTC won't work with the Blitz ecu without a speed signal to the ECU.

The elec fan at the front won't work anymore.

I bet the ecu will wig out... The ecu has a speed input signal for reason. Do you have an avcr or anything else that will want a speed reading?

Speedo won't work. Trip meter will prob stop.

Cant you just buy a new gear from czp anyway?

Yeah I can buy a new gear but it's the internal metal gear that's damaged, so this means pulling the box apart to replace. Will do if/when I do this but not now.

All the AC system will be removed, including the elect fan.
Speedo and trip meter will be removed with the instrument cluster.
Yes have AVCR but only uses this signal for gear based boost control, too much complication, will be running max boost in all gears :br:

I might email nistune and ask them if they know of anything else.

The car had been driver for years without the speedo working before I bought it, but it also had a faulty knock sensor circuit (code 34) and was leaking boost all over the place so it would never have run properly anyway lol.
