was wanting to know if any one on here does resprays at a good price. I did ringing around and people seem to be saying $4-5k.

How much do you want to pay for a respray in red?

4-5k is about average for a quote, although any price does not mean you are necessarily getting a fantastic job! So what I am saying is that backyard sprayers can also do a fantastic job and generally cheaper but you need to see the quality of the work either way as that is the most important factor when considering who will paint it.

Cost depends on many factors including existing damage/ how far it has to be rubbed back/ coats required etc.
Normally you will be looking at primer/ 3 coats colour and 3 clear so paint costs will be about 1k on average unless the colour is special - so just remember that when speaking to others.

If you prepare the vehicle yourself you could also get it done cheaper

Cheapest option is to simply do it yourself with setup costs well under a 1k these days.

slowly going through this right now - and I am now a qualified panel beater (used to be a plumber gasfitter) I have gone the stock colour - AH3 metallic red - it has a good helping of primer and a fair wack of paint (4 colour 1 half colour half clear and 4 clear) paint cost at trade price so far has hit ~ $1800 (I still have the bonnet boot and bumpers to do) if you can get complete respray for 5k go for gold but I would not expect much. We do complete cars starting around 8k eg e30 BMw convertible with average rust repairs and a heap of dent removal was $8000 we did a 52 Morris Oxford for just under $10000 that was a lot of rust repair work though.

wow resprays have gone up heaps...

i paid $1500 for a full respray 7 years ago, that won't even buy paint these days.

the quality was average at best but for the price i won't complain too much.

If you pay attention to detail and learn how to spray then all you need is a booth and paint. I think 2k for materials and booth rental plus A LOT OF ELBOW GREASE :br:

also there is a LOT of work stripping a Z for paint even when compared to a modern car like a VE or FG/BF the targas and associated weather strips, the tailgate bolts are accessed by removing all the roof lining components.

I got mine done last month for $1700 and it was outside only. Job was average but still looks nice. Had to replace a few trims which they broke as well which was kinda annoying.

Given Paint is probably around $100 per litre (on average for 2 pac AG2 red) and you average 4Ltrs for a full spray

and given you can buy a compressor and reasonable gun for under $250.
and given the protective gear you can buy for under$100

Say $1200-1500 all up (hardener / thinners / sanding paper etc)

Have you thought of doing it yourself?

I mean its fairly easy to do these days, if you have a place where you can do it.
The guns are fairly easy to use now, not like the old days and you can get educated by going on the web - the hardest thing to do is getting it smooth in sanding for spraying.
You only have to remember to have nice clean strokes at about 25cm and mix exactly to directions.

Just a thought, because you can save lots of dollars and have the gear for future sprays etc. But I realise its not for everyone or time and/or place does not permit.

    Like I said - just a thought

Out of interest, how viable/good is it to maybe get it rubbed back and get more clear sprayed on?? Cheaper? Worth it? Stupid idea?

If there is enough coats of red in there already and its in good condition - yes its viable - normally factory coat is good enough since its baked on and reasonably thick - you would only use a very fine sand paper though - say 1500 to 2000+ in grit just to revitalise the colour and not remove any excess.

Clear 2 pack is around $60 per litre - at 3 coats - yields around 3-4 ltrs for the whole car - but as stated depends on the above being in good condition

We did this once before on a old faded holden in light blue, rubbed back the top and the colour was vibrant underneath so we went straight to clear - turned out like it was freshly painted and the owner was impressed as we saved heaps of dollars as the base paints are generally the most expensive items - we used three top coats of clear to protect the paint given it was a bit thinner - the point is this can be viable if the paint is still in good condition.

Cheapest would be 2 pac. Mine is c7p red in 2 pac. Rubbed back, primer, two coats of paint, clear not required. Shiny and nice.

Paint, primer, sandpaper, all cost me $1050.

Save money and get obrien around to pull the glass (they will store it) rub it back, send to a paint shop for paint. Will cost you a lot less.

Just get the pros to to the final prep, paint and polish.

If they have to dissassemble your car, they'll charge, and so they should.

If you go this way, expect 2k ish for labour, 300 or so for transport. 3.5k total.

Just on the glass thing, obrien wont gaurantee they wont break your glass, especially windscreen. They broke mine but the new glass was fk all and it just adds to the clean look.

They will reinstall with new rubbers and trims and it looks mint. I paid 208 for removal and install, plus a couple hundred for new glass.

Yep. Got them to remove my glass and they broke it.....cost me a lot more than a couple hundred in the end with glass and trims etc. can't remember exactly how much though.

cost me $230 for o'briens to pull old and then come back and fit a new windscreen and rubber, and I'd expect that the panel shop had their 10% in that price as well. This was 2 years ago.

Having gone through the $3500 (closed door respray) and the $10000 (bare metal respray with me stripping and refitting everything) option, can say that there is NO comparison in finish. Paint alone cost me close to $2G (factory TK3 colour)

If you have a look at my car in my garage, the first photo's are what it used too look like and after the respray, which was a closed door job for $3500 and that included respraying a new guard and front bumper and replacement bonnet after a defect for the old one. I was happy with the outcome. the beauty is when i want too get the smaller area's done like the inside of the doors etc it isn't going too be as bad price wise. So look around have a chat too some local panel beaters/ spray painters, see what there work is like, be prepared to wait for them too get around to your car and my favourite advice ask how much for cash in the hand off the books .
