My system in my 1990 was r12 - there are hybrid fridgy gases that can be used or if the place has the correct licenses and gear they may be able to regas with r12 otherwise it has to be retro fitted to take the new gas. (this may have already been done as well)

R12 is very efficient but unfortunately since it's damaging to the environment if the system leaks and released into the atmosphere, it's been banned for quite a while now.

If you regas it you're gonna have to use R134a or whatever the new standard is. I've had to regas a few cars last year, the MX5 and the Skyline both needed it and I used Hydrocarbon refrigerant instead. It's cheap and while some say it'll damage the system I've been using it for a year now in 2 different cars, cools quite well and hasn't caused any problems.

the air con chap that did my r134 regas put a new receiver dryer on and changed the "O" rings on the high pressure connectors that was it, and it worked great

We sell hr12 where i work. Its a hydrocarbon based gas. Very popular, works well and we dont get any complaints. Ill be getting the zed regassed with it soon. Id suggest looking for a hydrocarbon based gas shop.

i switched to r134a and the A/C compressor died shortly after.
had it rebuilt and the shop said that they recommend that older r12 systems be charged with h-r12 (hydrocarbon r12 substitute - i think it's propane). most a/c places have it, i used Joe's old workshop Dontex in vermont.

What's a regas normally worth? I've got a 92 s2 and the aircon has never worked. May have never been regased after it was imported. Anyone have any idea if I'm likely to run into trouble?

Dont you need to use a lube as well?

tassuperkart Its a lie I tell you!

Possibly the worst thing that can be done for an automotive AC system is to let it sit unused.
Bonus for you is hopefully the system is still sealed with some positive pressure in there.

Have the system serviced with a new receiver/dryer, charge it with gas and hope for the best but dont be surprised, nor blame the AC guy if you loose the gas quite quickly.

If it holds gas well, best advice that can be given with automotive AC is the USE IT! At least everyday.

Please don't tell me it's a dash out job. So if I had to replace those parts what kind of dollars should I be expecting?

receiver drier bottle is about $30-$40 from repco/bursons, I believe the zed uses the same part number as another Nissan (patrol maybe). it's standard practice for this part to be replaced whenever the system is opened as it absorbs moisture in the system.

there is a gas called sp34e, can be used in r12 system with the old oil. cost is about 130$ for a kg of it at the moment unsure how much it costs from a automotive place as i work in the a/c & fridge world
