My n/a 300zx z32 was working fine I stopped and parked for a few hours at my parents. then I went to drive to a mates house and the whole way to my mates, then home it was missing and like was running on 4-5 cylinders.

what would make this happen all of a sudden.

Check all the connectors for the ignition coils. Over time they go brittle and will crack/come loose. Mine did exactly that two weeks ago ;) just had to push it back on to the coil properly.

Could be your PTU. Is it a series 1 PTU? Mine did that and that was the cause. Its a common problem.

I'm with Jordz. Corroded or stuffed connectors. Coil , injector , cas or p.t.u
would be a good spot to start.

Twin terror give you the quick list of things to check but you could add a vacuum leak to this as a vacuum leak near a cylinder can also cause a suspected missfire. You could also check to see if there are any codes on the ECU if it picked up the fault for a quick guide.

Its not to hard to check the above so just go through the motions, however regardless you should plan on getting rid of that S1 PTU asap as they can really cause a headache in fault finding and make you suspect everything else by imitating a vast range of problems - you dont always get a code with a faulty PTU either. All S1 PTU's will fail - its not if, rather when, it will fail.

    Goodluck with it all.

The odd thing too was when I popped the bonnet you could smell fuel so I am not sure if that means I could have a fuel leak somewhere cause when I turned it off you could still smell it.
ive checked vacuum hoses but I am not sure if I've checked them all because I am not sure where all of them are.

Similar thing happened to me with my first z, for me it was PTU related, but as stated above, best to clean all your connections to eliminate them as the problem first :)

I wouldnt stress too much about the fuel smell, thats most likely due to the unburnt fuel in the missing cylinder. Let us know what the culprit is.

Fuel smell could be because the rubber fuel hoses shrink in the cooler weather and the hose clamps need tightening. have a good look around and under the plenum for the clamps.

Also get your hands on a s2 PTU (same as one of the Skyline's PTU) because it will fail if it hasn't been replaced already.

Well I checked all the connectors to the coil packs today and there all clean and fine cant find any vacuum hose leaks so still no luck with the car I started it and when u put it in drive it wont idle normal it drops down under 500rpm then stalls and iam guessing this is due to it not running on all cylinders cause its like a lumpy cam v8 on idle doof doof dooof if its the ptu does anyone on here in brisbane area able to install the series 2 ptu for me as a cash job or carton job.

    thanks.

Also check your plugs even when new they can foul up (mine has been lately due to it only being able to idle in and out of the workshop) and cause the cylinder to misfire.

New Stock with connector.. Just plug n play..

    http://www.conceptzperformance.com/..._Type=NIS300&UID=20130702190335120.149.39.246

Alternatively check other Nissans at wreckers for units or contact forum member Vadar http://www.aus300zx.com/forum/showthread.php?t=316806

But the latter option you will need to do your own connections or pay someone else to do it.

Also replace your AFM with a know working one and test. I had similar issues, and after a grand of new parts and labour, it turned out to be the AFM.

With a ptu do they just quit straight up or do they fail slowly causing misfires just wondering.

There was a dry solder in mine which caused it to cut out now and then and got progressively worse. We opened it up and resoldered the connections which worked for a few days. A replacement alternative PTU from another nissan (Skyline I think) cost $75. It is only a 30 minute job to replace but you need someone who can solder.

BTW - mine ran on 5 cylinders when the PTU was buggered. A healthy motor should run on 5 cyclinders no worries. Not advisable to do so though.
