Those of you who have spent big $$ on mods

Looking back today I do regret spending so much on one car. I think I just don't have the energy anymore to keep going with it and would much rather buy something which is already spec'd up out of the showroom...I'm over it. It's fun in the beginning until you realise there is no investment and you're ultimately just wasting your money...that's my age showing there...

From my experience, whenever you change something, something else goes wrong and it's just hard to get the balance right...

Next car will be a Ferrari. That way I don't have to do anything to it and I can just admire it for what it is... ;)

That sums it up well for me too....

I'm sorely tempted by the Ferrari's too, it's not that expensive if you plan to keep it forever.

    Indeed

And unlike any jap car, in 50 years time, they will probably be worth more than they originally cost...I think they are actually an investment...depending on what you buy...

Personally I'd never be happy with a factory car, no matter what it was. It needs to have personality and individuality.

    The statement

"From my experience, whenever you change something, something else goes wrong and it's just hard to get the balance right"

is generally true for modified cars/bikes no matter what make or model. One of the problems that may make Z owner end up hatting his/her car imo is changing ome suspension components out in favor of noisy adjustable rose joint arms links ect. Not only do they transmit road noise more readily to the driver, but they also make the car ride like a fkn barge. Why anyone want to drive a car like that, unless on a perfectly smooth road, or it was a in-fact a ferrari, is beyond me. Hp is a different story, adding a little without going overboard is perfectly acceptable, but there are limits to every thing. For those who just want to enjoy the ride.

Sooooo, drove this on the weekend:

'06 Cayman S. Incredibly impressed by it. Much better than I was expecting. Sounds amazing with the engine a foot behind your back and pulls quite hard when it comes on cam over 5000rpm or so. Very neutral handling, from understeer to a oversteer with a bit of throttle. Inside is basic and too the point, but I like that. For me, a better drive than the E92 M3! The one I drove was Auto (not PDK) which took away from it, but a nice manual gearbox would complete it.

I'm still wanting to try a couple of other cars, mainly the M Coupe and E46 M3, but I doubt I will prefer them...

does the '06 models have LSDs? i know the newer ones do but unsure of the older ones as they were crippled a little bit because porsche wanted to leave a performance gap to the 911.

also the LSDs even in the '13 cayman is a nearly identical in design to the 1970s 911s using super thin clutch plates. have read that after some hard track days they wear out and become an open spinner.

don't make up your mind just yet, keep an open mind and i think the E46 M3 will probably impress.

Nope, no LSD. A quaife isn't that expensive if it comes to that. I'm not overly worried about on track performance. Track days are a bit of fun, but I don't care much for them. I would rather go for a nice drive in the mountains.

Been interesting reading the Cayman forums though, quite a few owners have 911's and other high end sports cars and plenty of them say they prefer driving their caymans....

no LSD gets annoying... but i suppose it's a licence saver ;)

it's a basic lightweight 2 seater. easy to drive, simple formula that has always worked and i'm not surprised ppl prefer to use it more regularly. if this is a daily it's probably cheaper to maintain than a E46 but i'd still be much more tempted by the M3. it's the last straight 6 M3 and you'd expect it to be the best one.

No, won't be a daily. More of an occasional weekend car. Keeping the Audi, and it just spends most of its life parked up at the airport.

Although you look to be heading more towards the race ready roader, but what about an E92 M3 or even the twin turbo 335i coupes? either one could give you luxury and race in one, with M3 being pretty close to race ready.

I've driven a 335i twin and they go hard, but what I like about them is, there is a underground modding scene starting to appear in the UK and :go fast" bits are popping up more regularly.

Can the cayman S and Lotus's be easily upgraded? Price and availability of parts wise?

so much avialable these days for $70-$100k.

I want a sports car, I've got a very nice Audi as a daily already.

My old man has a 335i, which is nice but not what I'm after. Very, very hard to find a manual.

I've test driven the E92 M3 through the hills, nice drive, but I preferred the Porsche.

Plenty of go fast parts around for the Lotus, less so for the Cayman. But not like I have the time to be doing stuff like that at the moment anyway.

theres a manual 335i on carsales going for $42k

I see where you are heading. Would you spend a bit more and get an r35 GTR? however these will one day be what are now the r32's...old and thrashed.

    As for a ferrari....360 modena's are under $100k now.

if you want something rare in Aus, what about a Corvette C6?

Haha, I should rephrase that. Hard to find a manual 335i in a coupe in a good colour with good options :p

Nah, not interested in a R35, or a Corvette.

    hai faive

good bang for your buck but never liked the looks nor the sound they make. it's just a go fast tool like an evo IMO. if i just wanted to go fast i'd rather use the money and build a supercharged K20 exige.

for the road, i'd choose the "slower" ferrari at the same price point every day.

  18. Anti

    Anti 14.7 x 14.7 = 44.1

    Couldn't agree more

Yeah, I don't think I'd be looking too hard at R35s if I had the money either, I'm definitely with Mike on the supercharged Exige idea though, you should do that.
