I need to buy the bluetooth/serial adapters, plus the development platform to write the code, and I don't want to do that unless I know it's going to be repaid. (If you don't know, I am unemployed, and have big bills to pay every month)

The question is simple... would you pay around or less than $50 for this app to run it on your Android device?

You would still need to buy a Bluetooth serial adapter and consult adapter, or one of theose all-in-one things. Maybe I could do an all-in-one kit??

I am not asking for a guarantee... just an idea.

I am playing devils advocate here ( don't own a phone or anything like that ), I don't think you should or could make it free but I am thinking 1/2 the price. Or make a free one which is time limited to 5 minutes, doesn't save out excel spreadsheets or has some functions crippled?

I don't think there is a big enough market for an android app (or any other OS for that matter ) to be a real big money spinner. Unless you built an angry birds/ consult hybrid app... Yeah!

Considering that by your own admission you don't own a phone, you have an interesting and limited (as in, not many people share it) point of view. If you view the poll results, at the time of reply, 76% of people would pay around $50, plus more for the additional hardware (circa $75).

For everyone's information, I will be releasing a free edition, which will be constrained in what it can do.

    I can't vote:(

I think App (and hardware at extra cost) is a great idea, but making a free version makes sense too.

I've been looking at mounting a tablet in my car for a while, but the only thing that has turned me off it is the lack of apps for OBD1 for android.

I was looking at windows tablets so there was a wider range of software, but realistically, a 10 inch is far too big to mount in the stereo surround, and the 7 inch windows ones are way too over priced.
I've settled with a nexus 7, and was only going to use it for GPS and music (i'd given up on consult).

There is an android app available, but it doesnt have gauge type outputs, only text :(
I'd be willing to pay $50 for the app if it meant that i could use a $250 tablet rather than a $1000 one.

That's the rationale I thought most would have :)

Yes, there will be a free (limited) version.

Considering the going rate for alternatives I think somewhere around $80 for a "bolt on" package would be perfectly reasonable

Dave, have you found the ultra cheap 'made in China' Bluetooth hardware on ebay yet?
I would like to order the hardware now, because it takes a few weeks to arrive.

Yes I would buy your Android app :)
because the hardware and software is affordable (even though I am temporarily unemployed )

Dave. You should put up a kick starter then post it up on here and twinturbo.net, 300zxclub etc. that way you're to out of pocket until you get the product out there.

Different donation amounts could give you different versions of the kit and so on.

    Food for thought

Hey do what you like. Just giving you another point of view. Sorry I voiced a different opinion to everyone else. If you think basing a pricing point/structure on a poll result on a niche forum such as this makes good business sense then go for it. That said I wish you the very best of luck.

That price seems more than reasonable and id definitely be willing to pay it if this software were made available. If you release a package with the hardware then beware using cheap adapters from china as they have a very high dead on arrival rate. If you found an adapter that works well, even if it costs a bit more, than it would be money well spent.

Good idea, I'll think it through.

I get your point, but consider this...

If I take advice from anyone that will give it, and then go with the general consensus (and most likely upsetting some, and making other really happy), then I can say that I have at least listened to the crowd.

It's better than hitting the ground with (let's say) a $300 app for Windows only that nobody but 1 or 2 can afford to buy.

At least this way I can judge if I have the right price point, and go from there.

So far, I think I have a good combination. More details will follow of course when I work out what I can do for free, and what others have to pay for.

Considering the initial intent of my software was to build the communications layer ONLY, (ie the thing that a developer would need to build a diagnostic app for our cars), I think I'm going pretty well.

I'd pay for it if it was comprehensive. But personally, I think $50 for a homebrew Android app is very expensive. You probably should start off small, build up a base and make your money off sheer numbers from word of mouth...you'd make a hell of a lot more...

Don't think of it as just an app, it's a diagnosis tool for your zed. Go buy another tool that does the same thing for less.
